SGM Radio Blog’s Top Ten: Crossway

We are thrilled to share with you these mini-interviews with some great Southern Gospel artists! Check back often to see who is next on the SGM Radio Blog's Top Ten!

Crossway
We are Matt McFarland and Paul Smith and together we make up Crossway. Based out of Nashville, we travel everywhere we can sharing the Good News of the gospel. We are firm believers and living testimonies to His unfailing love and grace

Becky Goble
My name is Becky Goble and I am blessed to be able to work with an amazingly talented group known as Crossway. I handle their booking and am acting administrator to their web pages as well. I have known them since the quartet days when I booked them into the church I was attending. Before the concert they allowed my boys, then 4 and 6, to “help” with the equipment and then thanked them from stage. The rest is history!

Crossway’s Top Ten, by Matt McFarland, Paul Smith and Becky Goble

1. Please tell us the name of your latest recording and your favorite song from that CD. What is the message behind this song?
Crossway’s Latest release is entitled “Unfailing Love”. It was written by Matt. I think God’s love is so often put into this little box and limited by our human understanding. This song reminds us that His ways are higher…His love greater than we can comprehend. It truly is the only love that will never fail. ~Paul

2. What is one group highlight from the last 12 months?
We actually took the stage following a Christian metal band one night and I would have to say that was an experience. Many of the band members stayed for our concert and even bought CDs! ~Paul

3. Have you been on a mission trip? If you have, where did you go? If you haven’t, would you like to go and where would you want to go?
I have not been on a mission trip. I will be honest in saying that I think our country needs to have more mission trips within its boundaries. A young lady from our youth group is going to inner city Chicago this summer. I think somewhere like that would be my choice. ~Becky

4. What is the furthest place you have been from your current hometown?
I lived in California for a couple years in my early 20’s. I have never been out of the country. Yeah, it’s sad, but true! ~Becky

5. What is your most favorite technological ‘gadget’?
Good grief, I am so not technologically inclined or equipped! That is where Paul comes in! I could say that the man would not survive long without his iPhone and that it has come in handy more than once when they were on the road and they had questions. I could email the info and they had everything they needed! Matt, who made fun of Paul and his iPhone at first is now equally addicted to his. ~ Becky

6. What was the best decade for music? Favorite artist from that decade?
I grew up in the 80’s and still love it. My Christian music favorites were the Paynes, The Hinsons, Gold City and the Inspirations. On the secular side, I gravitated to Air Supply, REO Speedwagon, Journey and Alabama.~ Becky

7. Who is your most favorite Bible person/character?
Paul, thus my answer for the next question. ~Matt

8. What is your favorite Bible verse?
Pretty much all of Romans 8 & 9! ~ Matt

9. What is your favorite thing to shop for?
Fishing stuff and….fishing stuff. ~ Matt

10. What is the last book you read?
The Last Song by Nicholas Sparks. I am reading my way through all his books at the moment. ~Becky

ReWind Wednesdays: Kenny Bishop 2006

Kenny Bishop: ‘Grace Works for Everyone’

Front Porch singing, concerts in every major venue and city, award-winning recordings, family camaraderie, and a very special combination of talent, voice, personality, and music style. The Bishops were well known and much loved when they retired in 2001. Kenny Bishop went on to delve into politics and began to see the Lord work and change him as he found himself on a new path. This path has led him to start 2006 with a schedule filling with engagements, a solo recording about to be released, and a desire in his heart to reach those who stand on the fringe of the church, looking for acceptance and grace.

Kenny recently took a few moments to share with Sgmradio his thoughts and plans for this new season in his life, in his first extensive interview since returning to the music scene. We present this interview almost in its entirety, to share with you the heart of this unusual artist and man of God.

Sgmradio: Kenny, your mission for your life…more than just your music…is outlined on your website. Can you explain to us your vision for your music as you head into this New Year? What do you want to say to your audience?

Kenny: For over fifteen years I enjoyed standing in front of audiences, blending voices with my dad and my brother, encouraging Christians and trying to convince non-believers to trust Christ as their redeemer and Lord. I was thrilled, especially, when I felt we had connected the audience with the One we were singing about. And honestly, that didn’t happen every night. But the sense of completeness I felt when it did was my assurance that we were doing the thing God wanted us to do at the time.

My approach today is a bit different. More than I’d like to be viewed as a singer, I want more to be understood as a communicator who tries to build bridges and understanding among those who profess Faith, and those who feel they’ve been alienated by those same people. The music is a vehicle that allows me an audience that is made up mostly of people who are pretty sure of what they believe. My years with the Bishops are making that possible.

But I’m convinced that we, as “religious” people need to be challenged. So, when I have the opportunity now to stand and sing to a group of solid Believers who are settled into their Christian routine, I challenge them to do something dangerous. I ask them to do the thing that Jesus did when he stepped outside of the accepted religious norm, objected to the exclusivity of the church of the day and reached into the world of the hurting, wounded and unwanted. I ask them to stop living up to the stereotype of being satisfied with their own spiritual condition while shunning and locking out anyone who would not fit comfortably into their group. I challenge them to truly study the life and deeds of Christ and make him their example for ministry. Most basically, my message is, if grace works for anyone it works for everyone. It’s for everyone or for no one.

Sgmradio: You have a new project hitting the streets soon. Can you tell us about this recording and its producer?

Kenny: I’m honestly a little nervous about this recording. It’s been over four years since I’ve been in a studio as an artist. It’s been ten years since I’ve recorded a solo piece. But as apprehensive as I am, I’m equally as thrilled with the opportunity to do it again…Right now the projected street date is sometime around mid-spring.

When I sat down with the record company to discuss my goals and hopes for the project we batted around several names to consider as the producer. When Norman Holland suggested Woody Wright I jumped on it...I’ve known Woody for a long time; he and I had an instant connection with the message of grace, which is what this recording is all about.

Sgmradio: Tell us about some of the writers for this new release. Are any of the songs “Kenny originals”?

Kenny: Even before I was aware that I would ever do this project, I decided, if I ever made another record, that I wanted the message to be singularly focused. I wanted to bare my heart in every song. And right now the thing that is on my heart more than anything else is grace.

So Daywind assembled several of their great writers in a room, and dialed in several more on a conference call and allowed me to address them personally. I shared my heart and my passion for reaching once-upon-a-time Believers who’ve felt abandoned by the Christian community. I also told them of my desire to try and awaken the church community to the enormous mission field that is within close reach of their own doors, and my desire to try and challenge them to take the risk of going after them. Several great songs came from that session. Woody Wright is not only a great producer; he is also an unbelievable writer. He contributed to this project, as did Gerald Crabb, Sonya Isaacs and Becky Isaacs Bowman, Jeff Steele, and Dawn Doss. I co-wrote a couple of songs with Caleb Collins and Adam Kohout and wrote another piece as well.

Sgmradio: What is the most special song to you on this new project?

Kenny: …The song that probably says what I hope to convey more than any of the others is “Don’t Let Who You Are Keep You Away.” In Scripture, Christ was the perfect example of acceptance and reception. The same God who desires a relationship with an outcast, unreligious Samaritan woman also receives an honest hyper-religious rule-keeper like Nicodemus. He tells both of them, in a sense, “Don’t let who you are keep you away.” If those two polar opposites are welcomed into God’s realm, all of us can be.

Sgmradio: Can you describe your ‘solo’ sound for us?

Kenny: One of the things I hope to accomplish on this record is to identify a sound that I can enjoy singing, an audience can relate to and enjoy, and one that will avoid sounding like my brother. Mark is such a phenomenal talent. His writing is clever and unmatched, and his sound is unmistakable and so enjoyable. But we are brothers, and it would be easy to drift into his sound if I’m not careful. I’m not sure how to tag it, but the base for my sound will definitely be Southern Gospel.

Sgmradio: Do you have a close-future goal of what you would like to see happen with your music/ministry, in perhaps the next 6 months to a year?

Kenny: I don’t think I’m capable of looking that far ahead. I’m really surprised at this point that we’re even discussing records, appearances and music. I wasn’t sure that I would ever have another opportunity to share in a public way again. Not too long ago I was convinced that I had squandered all of my chances to make any kind of declarations about God’s love, whether through songs or sharing the Scriptures. God continues to surprise me with opportunities, so I find it difficult to make any plans on my own. My goal though is simply to go in the direction that God makes available and tell about grace when I get there.

Sgmradio: Your calendar is filling with engagements. Tell us about the kinds of venues and places you will be visiting in the coming months. (Editor’s note: Kenny Bishop is being represented by the Tana Lonon Agency, based in Florida).

Kenny: I have a wonderful support team that understands my approach to ministry. Daywind Records and the folks there are simply marvelous. Tana Lonon is a crucial part of the team as well. She and I have spent lots of time talking about our shared vision of doing what it takes and going wherever we can to share the message of unconditional love. In so many ways, I couldn’t begin to compare myself to Jesus, but I’ve asked her to imagine if He had a booking agent, how would a request for Him to come and minister be handled. We can’t think of a place He wouldn’t go, or a group of people who couldn’t benefit from His message and ministry. As it is right now, I’m pretty much singing and sharing exclusively in churches. I wouldn’t be disappointed if that never changed.

Sgmradio: Your website indicates more of an emphasis on reaching people where they really are. How has this affected the way you interact with your audience?

Kenny: The departure of the Bishops was abrupt and final. A lot of people were confused, angry and worried. The situation was not good; however, the rumors that made their way back to me were even more sordid. I did not want to just reappear as quickly and without explanation as I disappeared. I could not pretend that my departure four years ago was noble or righteous. At the same time, I did not want to embarrass anyone or say more than was necessary.

But I was determined to be honest and let people know that Prodigals do come home. In my rebellion I learned a lot – probably more than I ever did in all of my years in the pews. I learned mostly that there is a huge world full of used-to-be Believers who desperately want to know God again, but they’ve been turned off by the pride and self-preservation of a church system that places more importance on its image than it does its true mission to be lovers of the unloved. I talk about this in my appearances.

I do look for and reach out to those who are there with needs, but I have other opportunities to minister to them. I focus much of my time in front of church congregations on exposing Christ as the real lover and forgiver that he is, and challenging them to follow his example wherever it may lead them.

Sgmradio: Does your involvement in (state) politics help or hinder your music ministry? What affect does it have?

Kenny: I work for the Governor in Kentucky. I’ve been a part of his staff since he was a U.S. Congressman. I simply love my work and the people I am able to be around everyday. Governor Fletcher and the First Lady are very supportive of my ministry work. He was pastor of a church in Lexington, Kentucky for a number of years, so he has a heart for helping others. I’m often called on to sing at official events. We host a performance series at the Governor’s Mansion as well, and the most well received and acclaimed event we’ve hosted was a Sunday night Gospel singing that featured Jeff and Sheri Easter, Triumphant Quartet, my brother Mark and the Bishops. We’re planning to do another soon.

Sgmradio: What other types of activities are you currently involved in, apart from your political interests and involvement?

Kenny: I love my church. I am not involved in leadership there, but I do offer input, worship and simply take in the Word. I also do as much volunteer work as I can. There are a lot of hungry people who need to be fed and children who simply need a heart to love them. The most abundant joys of my life are my children Casie and Christian.

Sgmradio: What do you see as your involvement in Southern Gospel Music? Are you interested in again being one of the ‘movers and shakers’ in SGM?

Kenny: To be a part of some of the major decisions and planning that took place during my involvement in the industry was a treat for me. However, now I simply want to share the things I’ve come to know and feel so deeply. My name doesn’t do much in the industry today. My record company and the others who’ve invested in me deserve a good return on their commitment. I want them to be profitable and feel the risk they took in me was worth it. They are a great tool that the Lord has brought into my life to give me opportunities to share Grace. That’s my motivation to be a part of Gospel Music.

Sgmradio: What is the one thing that excites you the most about being back in front of a crowd, singing about Jesus?

Kenny: Singing about Jesus.

Latest News from The Dove Brothers

The Dove Brothers just finished up their latest recording with Sonlite Records. This album features some great songs written by Gerald Crabb (Hey Lazarus), Phil Cross (Preaching In Prison), and McCray Dove penned a couple for this recording (If I Knew Then & I Recall). The Dove Brothers have done it again with a mixture of old and new songs blended in with their Country Gospel flavor that shows their versatility musically and vocally and can still deliver the four part harmony Southern Gospel style. From the new country popish vocals of Jerry Martin to the old country stylings that McCray Dove offers with his vocals and not to forget the low down solid bass performance that David Hester gives with each song. Eric blends it all in and holds it together with his smooth baritone vocals. This combination can do it all with a variety of styles.
They're UNSHAKEABLE!

The CD UNSHAKEABLE is scheduled to be released by the end of July and the Dove Brothers are already making preparations for the UNSHAKEABLE Tour in the near future. "We are so excited about this new project and the songs that we will perform on this new tour. We are getting ready and getting geared up for the launch of the new recording as well as performing these great songs. We hope you will enjoy what we have worked hard at giving you on the UNSHAKEABLE project. We look forward to coming to a city near you and you having a blast at our concerts. Here is some behind the scenes footage of a session featuring the song Unstoppable. Enjoy! Click here to view.

A Sneak Peak!

Now is your chance to vote for your favorite song off of the latest recording by the Dove Brothers entitled "UNSHAKEABLE". The last time we did this for the Hold On recording it was a huge success in seeing what you the fans wanted to hear on the radio. So we are doing it again. You can vote once a day and we are offering a Sneak Peak of the songs now in the player on our website. Just like last time, your favorite could be the one picked for the first single! So have a great time listening and don't forget to vote!

Band News!

The Dove Brothers are excited about the addition of the band. This 3 piece ensemble comprises of Adam Harman on piano, Marc Peele on the bass and Devin Dove rounding out the band on drums. The band officially started at the Dove Brothers Homecoming event. McCray states, "I remember going to concerts when I was a kid. Southern Gospel music had some of the most talented musicians in any style of music you would ever hear. My family would go early to the concerts because we knew the place would be packed! We wanted a good seat. When we got there and they seated you, we could see all the instruments. The piano, guitars, steel guitar, drums etc. the microphones all in place and you could feel the excitement in the air and all around you throughout the building." We just don't feel that anymore it seems. I also believe it is because we got away from LIVE music. We have left the young people out of our music unless they can sing or drive a bus, we don't have a place for them. If everyone who loves Southern Gospel music wants to see more young people get involved and support it then we say LET THEM PLAY! Give them an opportunity to be apart of our music with the talents that God has given them. If you love live music like we do and want to experience the excitement like it was back in the 70's and 80's era of music, then we believe you will love the next Dove Brothers concert with the addition of Adam, Marc and Devin. Coming to a city near you!

Nashville, TN (May 21, 2010) – Beyond The Ashes is happy to congratulate lead singer, Casey Rivers, his wife, Doni, and daughter, Audra, on the addition of a brand new baby boy, Stellan Rivers, to their family.

Stellan was welcomed into the world on Sunday, May 16th, 2010. He weighted 6lbs 8 oz. and was 19 ¾ in. long. Casey was at home to be with his wife and family when it was time to head to the hospital for this monumental event in their lives. Casey expressed. “Through the birth of my sweet baby girl, Audra, and precious newborn baby boy, Stellan, the depth of God's love is clearer to me than ever before!”

Group owner and tenor singer for Beyond The Ashes, Anthony Facello, shared, “We truly believe that family is the greatest ministry ever given to someone, and with the suspicion that the little guy may make his appearance a bit early, I felt it best to have Casey stay near home. It’s easier to find a fill in for a singing group than it is to find a fill in for the daddy.” Stellan made an appearance, even before his dad, on the overhead screens, at Grace Fellowship Church in London, KY just hours after his arrival.

Sharron Kay King - Top Ten

1. Please tell us the name of your latest recording and your favorite song from that CD. What is the message behind this song?

My latest recording is Don't Stop Believing. My favorite song off of this CD is Don't Stop Believing. In a world where we don't know who to believe in or what to except from day to day, we can always believe in God, His word and His ways, for they are not our own.

2. What is one group highlight from the last 12 months?
Highlight from last 12 months: My oldest Grand-daughter Zoey, was baptized in Jesus name!

3. Where is your favorite place to eat on the road?
Oh gee golly, Ruby Tuesday's is always a hit cause they have the best salad bar. We also eat a lot in the motor home so we can eat healthier. My husband really doesn't like eating out so I've learned to be quite the little chef. Especially after I lost 70 pounds, eating out isn't always a good idea.

4. What is the best city to visit in the US? And…if you’ve been…in Canada and overseas?
Best city in USA would have to be Richmond, Indiana so I can see my family. My husband loves Jackson Hole, WY. He has yet to take me there! I have been to the Canadian Mountains and it's absolutely beautiful. I've been to The Holy Land, Greece, and Turkey. It was awesome! Been to the Caribbean a few times on cruises.

5. What artist are you listening to right now?
I love so many different artists it's hard to say just one. I love Jim Reeves Gospel Collections, The Original Hinsons. I love the old stuff.

6. What are your thoughts on Spam (the product, not the email)?
I love a fried Spam sandwich with mustard! I grew up eating many of these.

7. What is one habit you would like to break?
Well let me ask my husband. He says I don't have any. On the other hand, I would like to change my vulnerability. I have a bad habit of believing everyone. That's not a good idea now-a-days. Let me add my weakness for ice cream!

8. Who is your most favorite Bible person/character?
Esther because of her willingness to be used, and then Job for his faithfulness.

9. What is your favorite Bible verse?
Rev 12:11 “And they overcame him by the blood of the lamb, and by the word of their testimony.”

10. Name a character trait or fruit of the spirit you would really like to develop in your life.
I would love to have better discernment and the gift of healing. There are too many people suffering from needless pains from a lack of faith.

Men of Music and Sunday Edition Lend Voices for Special Flood Relief Benefit Concert

Sunday Edition Also Takes Hands-On Approach to Flood Relief
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – (May 19, 2010) – Southern Gospel favorites the Men of Music and Sunday Edition took part in a special Nashville Flood Relief benefit concert this past weekend. Both groups performed sets as part of the multi-artist event where many of the industry’s brightest names also performed.

Men of Music’s Gregory Colburn said, “It was an honor for Men of the Music to be a part of such a great event. We had a blast performing with so many other great artists. Everyone did a great job, and I know they raised a lot of money to help the flood victims.”

Deon Unthank (of Sunday Edition) said, “It was a real no-brainer to be a part of this event. We are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus – and if we are able to do that by giving up a Friday evening and donating our talents for the Lord, then we’re happy to do it!”

“This flooding hit real close to home, and while our group was very fortunate and didn’t see any damage, we do know people who did lose of a lot of their personal items,” mentioned Unthank.

In addition to the Men of Music and Sunday Edition, several of Southern Gospel’s brightest names appeared at the special Flood Relief benefit concert this past Friday evening, May 14, 2010. The event was designed to help raise funds to aid in relief from the devastating floods that hit Nashville and other Middle Tennessee communities earlier this month.

Other artists that participated in the event included Palmetto State Quartet, Three Bridges, Freedom, Dianne Sherrill, The Sargents, Firm Foundation Quartet, Allen Frizzell, Angelina McKeithen, The Songfellows, Mystery Men Quartet, Jeremy Calloway, and Southern Salvation. Sunday Edition’s Amy Marie Unthank and Chris Unthank also took a more hands-on approach to flood relief. The two joined a team that went into the hardest hit areas and helped clear out homes and clean for those who needed assistance.

“The devastation was truly shocking,” mentioned Chris. “We couldn’t believe that we were standing in areas where the water would have been over our heads just the weekend before. These people are hurting and just need the love of Jesus. We hope that we showed them His face through our work.”

Assistance is still needed throughout the Middle Tennessee area. To find out more information on how you can help in flood relief – visit http://nashvillest.com/2010/05/03/so-nashville-is-flooded-how-can-i-help/ with all the latest info.

Ernie Haase & Signature Sound Announce Cathedrals Tribute Concert & Video Taping

(May 18, 2010 – Alexandria, IN) On July 24, 2010, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound will present a Cathedrals Tribute concert & video taping at Reardon Auditorium on the campus of Anderson University. The evening will be hosted by Bill Gaither and will feature Ernie Haase, Devin McGlamery, Doug Anderson and Tim Duncan singing the best-loved songs from The Cathedrals’ legendary repertoire of quartet standards. With their own unique style, Ernie Haase & Signature Sound will honor their quartet heritage while breathing new energy into gospel hits that have been favorites for decades.

Ernie is thrilled for this chance to honor his heroes, stating: “It is no secret that I loved (and still love) The Cathedral Quartet! As a young teenager, I had a poster of them on my wall right next to my favorite sports icon. George and Glen were as big as Larry Bird and Pete Rose to me…even more so because their music changed and formed my life.

“To have been part of George & Glen's history and to have been there for the last 10 years was nothing less than ‘epic’ for me. Now, ten years after The Cathedrals retirement, we are blessed beyond words to be able to revisit 20 of The Cathedrals most popular songs. We have been working on this project for the last two years, giving our heart and soul for the two greatest gospel singers to ever grace the stage... George Younce and Glen Payne. Together ‘THEY’ were The Cathedral Quartet and there will never be another. I hope EH&SS listeners, as well as the old Cathedral fans, will be blessed and happy with what we have done to say ‘thanks’ to these great men.”

Friends and fans can be a part of history by attending the live taping. The concert time is 6:00 p.m. on July 24 at Reardon Auditorium in Anderson, Indiana. Tickets for Ernie Haase & Signature Sound’s Cathedrals Tribute are now on sale at the Reardon Auditorium box office ($25 or $20 pricing available depending on seat location) and can be reserved by phone at 1-800-745-3000 or online through Ticketmaster. The Impact Award was awarded to the individual or organization that has made the biggest impact on the Southern Gospel music genre for the previous year. Deon & Susan Unthank were given the award based on their accomplishments with SoGospelNews.com.

It was announced last month that SoGospelNews.com would be changing its name and re-branding itself as AbsolutelyGospel.com. AbsolutelyGospel.com will not change its focus on Southern Gospel music. However, the name change also gives administrators of the site a chance to feature other artists and individuals in the Gospel music community that fans of Southern Gospel have come to love – such as Inspirational, Christian Country, and Black Gospel artists.

The site launched a new layout and logo in January as well as the new tag line that simply said “Absolutely Gospel.” The site officially flips over to AbsolutelyGospel.com on April 13, 2010 – the night of the site’s annual SGN Music Awards Celebration. In addition, all of the site’s big events – such as the SoGospelNews Music Fest and SGN Music Awards will be rebranded as well. The Absolutely Gospel Music Fest will take place this July in Smyrna, Tennessee, and the AGM Awards Celebration is already scheduled for April 2011.

We are thrilled to share with you these mini-interviews with some great Southern Gospel artists! Check back often to see who is next on the SGM Radio Blog's Top Ten!

The Shireys by Victoria Shirey

My name is Victoria Shirey. I sing with my family's group, The Shireys. Group members consist of myself, my parents, Wayne and Darlene Shirey, and my younger sister, Rachael.

The Shireys’ Top Ten by Victoria Shirey

1. Please tell us the name of your latest recording and your favorite song from that CD. What is the message behind this song?

Our latest recording is titled, The Shireys - Unconditional Love. One of my favorite songs on this project is called, "My Load Has Been Lifted". It talks about how we can get so bound by all the burdens of this life, but when we call on God's name, He lifts that load right off and gives us such freedom.

2. What is one group highlight from the last 12 months?

We signed with Mansion Records out of Branson, MO with Bill Traylor a few months ago.

3. Where is your favorite place to eat on the road?

Oh gosh, that's a tough question. Being that, the places we eat on the road consist of Waffle House, Huddle House, McDonalds, IHOP, and Steak n' Shake; out of those, my favorite is Steak n' Shake.

4. What is your favorite TV series rerun?

I love The Nanny!

5. What is your most favorite technological ‘gadget’?

Oh my gosh, I love gadgets! I guess you could call me a gadget guru. I love them all, but I think if I had to choose one favorite, it would be my blackberry phone. They are always coming up with something newer and cooler than they started off with.

6. What was the best decade for music? Favorite artist from that decade?

I think the 50's was a wonderful decade of music. I love the oldies, and I'm a huge Elvis Presley fan!

7. Who is your favorite Christian author/teacher/evangelist?

I love Tommy Bates and Jentzen Franklin. They are so awesome and so anointed!

8. Who is your most favorite Bible person/character?

I like Esther. I like the boldness she had.

9. What is your favorite Bible verse?

Wow, I have so many. One of my favorites that gets me through a lot is Philippians 4:13.

10. What is the last book you read?

I am actually in the middle of a book right now called Becoming The Woman God Wants Me To Be by Donna Partow.

ReWind Wednesdays: The Ball Brothers 2006

Often new artists are advertised in the media as “the” hottest new group or soloist in Southern Gospel. As trite as this is becoming to all of us, this phrase has also been used for an innovative trio from central Illinois. Attend one of their concerts, or even take a brief moment to peruse their website, and you will understand why there is so much buzz about The Ball Brothers.

Stephen, Joshua, Andrew and Daniel Ball just recorded their first CD in February and have released the single “I’m Already Living Forever” to great reviews on radio. They are managed by Terry and Brian Hudson, and are touring with Ernie Haase and Signature Sound. This young group has a progressive sound with a hint of 1940’s flavour, and with their harmonies and energy they are making their mark quickly on the Southern Gospel scene.

Sgmradio recently caught up with the Ball Brothers and asked them to introduce themselves. We are reproducing much of the interview as it occurred to allow our readers to get better acquainted with these men. Please meet The Ball Brothers:

Daniel: My name is Daniel, I'm second-born. My wife Tasha and I just celebrated our fifth anniversary. We have a three year old boy named Logan and are expecting our second child in early November. I sing lead and do most of the emceeing. I also do most of the driving.

Josh: I'm Josh the youngest brother. My main responsibilities are running the sound and taking care of all the product. I also do some of the office work. I join in with the guys on a song or two during concerts and also cover anyone's part if their sick… Although no one’s ever been sick, but chances are one day I'll have to fill in so I'm always ready. I'm 20 years old and also the only one that's single.

Andrew: I’m Andrew the oldest brother. I’m married to my lovely wife Moriah and we have a two-year-old daughter, Natalie. We are expecting a boy at the end of August. I sing tenor and I’m in charge of most of the phone calls and office work.

Stephen: I’m Stephen, third-born. I got married to Emily a little over six months ago. I’m in charge of pictures for the website and updating our e-mail list.

Sgmradio: What is one unique thing that separates you from your brothers?

Daniel: I'm ambidextrous.

Josh: Freedom! I'm not married.

Andrew: I'm the only one that can wiggle my ears.

Stephen: I’m not really sure, but my wife says I’m the best looking.

Sgmradio: How did you become interested in music and singing?

Daniel: Our parents both sing and play instruments. We picked up on the singing at a very young age. None of us ever learned to play any instruments. Our first introduction to Southern Gospel was from our Uncle Bob. We loved going to his house and listening to his records and cassettes of the Cathedrals. We would sing along till each of us found a part, and then we would sing the song in church. I think one of our first specials in church was "Can He? Could He? Would He?” We found a cassette with us singing that song. We sound like the Chipmunks.

Josh: My brothers had always talked about the Cathedrals. I didn't even know there was other Southern Gospel Groups, so when I went to my first "concert" I thought for sure it was going to be the Cathedrals. We got there to the concert and it was another SG group singing. I cried! I was only like 14…Just kidding... I was 5.

Andrew: When I was about 6 our dad started a men’s quartet to sing specials in church. I remember sitting in on their practices and listening to all the parts and pretty soon I found myself being able to hear each part individually. We also listened to a lot of Southern Gospel growing up.

Stephen: I was about four when I heard my first SG album. I’ve been listening and singing ever since.

Sgmradio: Who are your musical influences?

Daniel: One of my main influences would have to be the Cathedrals. They were one of the only SG groups that came up to Illinois, so we really looked forward to seeing them. We also spent a lot of time at our Grandma's house watching her Gaither videos.

Josh: Cathedrals, Ernie Haase and Signature Sound, Gaither Vocal Band & William Hung.

Andrew: We all grew up listening to the same groups because we only had one CD player in the house. Today I enjoy listening to music from the 1940’s; we try to incorporate some of the harmonies and sounds from that era into the music we sing today.

Stephen: One of my main influences right now would have to be Doug Anderson. He’s really done a lot to help me learn how to use my voice properly. I also really like Marshall Hall and Jim Brady, both baritones.

Sgmradio: Who are your spiritual heroes?

Daniel: My parents. I have seen them have a consistent walk with the Lord my whole life. They taught me that spirituality isn't just a show when you’re out in front of people. Spirituality is what you really are on the inside even if there's no one around. If you have a good relationship with the Lord on the inside, it will shine through to your outward appearance.

Josh: We had an evangelist named Paul Levin that came to our church when I was pretty young and he shared his life's story. I remember seeing how old and Godly he was and seeing how God had richly blessed his life. It challenged me to live a clean and pure life that's totally dedicated to the Lord.

Andrew: I love to read about the trisls that the apostle Paul went through in his lifetime. It makes any trials that I go through seem small. My parents and my father-in-law are also my spiritual heroes.

Stephen: My Dad is my spiritual hero. I’ve seen him handle almost any situation imaginable. I’ve seen him live his life practicing what he preaches.

Sgmradio: As your schedule gets busier and you get more well known, how do you keep grounded?

Daniel: As our schedule gets busier it's hard to find the time to get everything done I need to. My personal relationship with God is always first. As long as I keep God first, the other things will fall into place.

Andrew: One thing that's really nice about having our Dad as pastor, is that he can see areas that we might be struggling in before we do. He helps keep us grounded as well as friends from all over the country who call in to check on us.

Josh: I always try to remember where we started from not that long ago. I also know that everything we accomplish is a blessing from the Lord.

Stephen: My family and friends help keep my grounded.

Sgmradio: What are some of your hobbies? (I’m guessing basketball!!)

Daniel: I love basketball. Growing up with three brothers, I can really get into any competitive sport. I really like to hunt whitetail deer and fish for anything. I also really enjoy cooking on the grill. Josh might also answer "cooking on the grill" …just remember he is the student and I am the master.

Josh: Any kind of sports. Weightlifting and working out. Fishing. Skiing, even though it's put me in the hospital a couple times. Cooking on the grill.

Andrew: I'll let Daniel and Josh fight over who is the Master Chef. I can't even cook a frozen pizza without setting off every smoke alarm within a three-block radius. Basketball, collecting old Christmas music, song writing and computers are some of my hobbies.

Stephen: BASKETBALL!!! I also enjoy running with my wife, fishing, hunting, and skiing. One of my new hobbies is weightlifting…as you can tell, I’ve just started.

The Ball Brothers love for sports has found it’s way into their musical careers as well.
“Anyone who travels and sings can tell you what a drain it can be on you physically”, Andrew says. “We try to get in early and play some basketball or at least do some running before every concert. It keeps us in shape and allows us to have a great amount of energy on the stage.”

The group’s website also reflects their fun-loving, energetic personalities. “We do the website ourselves. It allows us to keep it updated better and put our personality into it. We love to have fun. We hope that anyone who visits the website will go away having a better understanding of what we're like in our everyday lives. The arcade idea came up when we were trying to put some stuff on the site that would go along with our last name. We also call our newsletter "The BALL TEAM". We kinda use the sports theme throughout the website.”

It’s obvious that these guys love each other and get along well together. However, even the best of brotherly relationships can be a little difficult at times. When asked about how these relationships are affected by spending so much time together, the boys were rather generous in their comments.

Daniel: We all get along really well. These guys aren't only my brothers, but they're my closest friends. The most trying thing would probably be making sure no one gets hurt when we're playing basketball.

Andrew: The camaraderie is the best thing. The most trying thing is trying to have as much fun as possible, but still get all of our work done.

Josh: The best thing is the “honesty”, none of try to patronize each other. We all know what everyone is thinking at anytime. The most trying thing would probably be the “honesty” it can be brutal. Also being the youngest brother can be hard sometime because the buck stops with me.

Stephen: We all like to have fun no matter what we’re doing. We all love to travel and sing. The most trying thing is all of us trying to stay in shape while eating fast food all the time.

The Ball Brothers are Pastor’s Kids and church has always been a major part of their lives. Now residing Georgia, Andrew talks about their connection with the local church there and looking beyond its walls. “Our Dad is the pastor of Liberty Baptist Church in Chickamauga, GA That is our home church and we stay very involved in the different ministries of the church.” But their compassion for others goes further than the local congregation. “We're artist representatives for World Vision. Each of us have been on several foreign missions trips to Europe. We have worked with missionaries and seen first hand the extreme poverty that many of the children in these countries have to overcome. We were introduced to World Vision through our manager and immediately knew it was something that we wanted to be a part of.”

This love for others and drive to reach out to them is reflected in the reasons each brother gives for doing what they do. Sgmradio asked the Ball Brothers about why they are on the road, singing gospel music, and their own personal mission in life.

Daniel: First of all to see lost souls get saved. Secondly, to encourage believers.

Josh: My mission is to reach and minister to as many people as I can with my life.

Andrew: I'm not out to make a name for myself or our group. I want to see God work through me in everything I do.

Stephen: My mission is to stay in God’s will. I have a real burden for young people. I would like to see more young people getting involved in Southern Gospel music.

Sgmradio: What are your goals for the group for the next year?

Daniel: My main goal is for us to stay in the center of the Lord's will. If we do that there's no tellin’ what we can accomplish as a group.

Andrew: To put our whole heart and energy into pursuing the doors that God is opening for us.

Josh: Sell 2 billion CDs. I get paid off commission.

Stephen: We set our goals so high that there’s no way we can reach them, but we know we’ll reach our maximum potential trying. In other words, I have no idea what we’ll accomplish over the next year.

With progressive sounds and tight harmonies, the Ball Brothers have caught the attention of the music world. With their humour and honesty, it’s easy to see why they then capture the minds and hearts of those who listen to them. These brothers are quickly building an audience that hear their message and are encouraged to pass it along. This is a very personal calling for each of them and while they are excited to see where the Lord is taking their music, they are striving to remain in His will and listen to what He’s saying to them today.

Sgmradio: What is the Lord speaking to you about this week?

Daniel: PATIENCE. I don't like waiting for anything and it seems over this past week the Lord's making me wait on a lot of things. The subject has also come up in my devotions.

Andrew: The Lord’s been teaching me to manage my time better.

Josh: The Lord’s been speaking to me about having more compassion for others. Some time I judge people without ever considering what they might be going through in their life.

Stephen: The Lord has really opened my eyes to see how many lost people are around me in my everyday life. I need to be doing more to witness to them. We are accountable for every person that we come in contact with to tell them about the Lord.

The Ball Brothers are recording a live DVD in Pigeon Forge Tennessee in May. Please check their website for information on this and other concert dates. Appearances and information on joining The Ball Team can be found at www.theballbrothers.com .
