Reach For the Mark

Like many others I have been watching a lot of the Vancouver Winter Games in the past two weeks. As a Canadian I have cheered on the red and white to many Olympic medals, and watched as the athletes faced great adversity on and off the field to reach their goals.
One of those was Joannie Rochette, the women's figure skating medalist from Quebec. She and her family arrived for the games in Vancouver last weekend. Early Sunday morning her mother passed away in the hospital at age 55. Joannie, her family and most of Canada were in shock.
Joannie proceded to complete and her first performance was beautiful as she skated well and only began to cry at the very end. Her final performance was more of a struggle but Joannie gained the medal podium, receiving a bronze for her courageous skate.
I was chatting recently with an artist about how we face things in life that may keep us from reaching our goal of closer union with Jesus. These things may be really challenging and downright horrible to face, but the Lord has promised to be with us every step of the way. He will not stop at 'burning our barley fields' (read Kings for this story) and will do what it takes to bring health to our souls. Sometimes that means He will allow 'bad things' to happen to 'good people'.
It is said that what doesn't kill us makes us stronger, and the more we realize that in ourselves we can't face the really tough things in life, the more we lean on the strength of God in our weakness. He is our strength and He calls us to keep pressing on, to reach the mark of the higher calling, to gain the crown of life at the end of the race.
Like Joannie, I want to keep pressing on.

Sunday Edition Completes Vocals for Much Anticipated New Release

New Project Is An Intimate Look at the Music of the Church

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Sunday Edition, one of Nashville’s favorite groups, was recently in the studio finishing up vocals for their much-anticipated recording. Vocals were recorded at Square One Studio in Franklin, Tennessee. The project is being produced by group members Chris and Deon Unthank with additional production by Steve Allen (Vestal Goodman, Legacy Five, Gold City), and all vocals were arranged by Sunday Edition.

The new recording, simply titled Sunday Worship, will be an intimate recording featuring a piano-only backdrop that focuses on the music of the church.

Deon Unthank of Sunday Edition said, “Everywhere we go, people ask us to sing one of two things – either worship songs or hymns. Well, this release focuses on both those aspects of church music.”

“We love all of these songs, and they mean so much to us for different reasons. We have had such a blast singing these songs and seeing how people react to such timeless songs,” mentioned Chris Unthank of Sunday Edition.

Sunday Worship features an equal share of modern and classic worship tunes like “Blessed Assurance,” “Precious Lord,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Indescribable,” “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone),” and “Friend of God,” in addition to many more songs.

Sunday Worship is scheduled to be released this Spring through Southern Spin Records.

Sunday Edition recently released their follow-up to the smash-hit “He Bore a Cross.” The new single, titled “Mercy Walks a Road,” was once again produced by Glen Bates and written by Bates and Glen Ashworth. The new song is another special single release with BSA World Records.

The song is currently available for radio stations to download via Chuck Peters’ SG Show Prep and will be released in March through DJ Man Promotions, TS Promotions, and the Rick Hendrix Company.

“He Bore a Cross” became the group’s biggest hit to date earlier this year – giving them their highest charting position on the Singing News Top 80 (#44) and earning the group its first Top 10 New Release. In addition, the song landed Sunday Edition its second #1 hit on the GospelMusicTimes.com Top 40 Fan Chart. The song has also charted on all major Southern Gospel charts – SoGospelNews.com Top 40 Weekly Chart, Christian Voice Magazine Top 100 Southern Gospel Chart, and PowerSource Magazine Top 100 Southern Gospel chart.

Southern Gospel, Bluegrass and Country Legends Honored in the Carolinas

The Carolinas Country-Bluegrass-Gospel Hall of Fame recently held its third annual awards celebration adding several Georgians to their honorees.
Among the Legend Award winners are entertainer/actor Randall Franks, entertainer “Doc” Tommy Scott, and Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame member Ed Wallace.
Franks of Ringgold, Ga. is best known as “Officer Randy Goode” from “In the Heat of the Night.”
"I am honored to be among my fellow Georgians who were recognized for their contributions to the musical experience in North and South Carolina. I have enjoyed some of my greatest performance opportunities there from appearing with my band the Peachtree Pickers as a youth at Myrtle Beach for Norman Adams, to appearing with Bill Monroe, Jim and Jesse, and others around the two states. My Randall Franks Show held its biggest performance in the Carolinas for a crowd of 30,000, so I have many fond memories of the great folks in the Carolinas who have supported me."
Scott, 92, of Toccoa, Ga. was a 1940s Grand Ole Opry ® star and a western film star who hosted two nationwide TV shows in the 1940s and 50s and made over 29,000 public appearances.
“I was honored to be included among this talented group of award recipients,” Scott said. “From my early days on radio on WPTF, WRAL, and later for the Man O Ree and Vim Herb Medicine companies, the folks in the Carolinas have always been part of my life and music. North Carolina and South Carolina are among the top states where my own medicine show made repeat appearances throughout my career.”
Wallace of the Sunshine Boys and the Light Crust Doughboys starred in films, on radio and records and in venues around the world.
"This award means a great deal to me since it took me back to my roots when I started with the Sunshine Boys at WSB radio in Atlanta, Ga. in 1942,” Wallace said. “It was the background of everything I have done in the music field since it led from radio to record
contracts, movies, television and personal appearances all over the United States and foreign countries.
“This award puts the icing on the cake and I appreciate the Carolinas Country-Bluegrass-Gospel Hall of Fame for this honor."
Also honored from Georgia were Georgia Music Hall of Fame member Johnny Carson and Phyllis A. Cole of Atlanta, Ga. receiving both the Pioneer and Icon awards for their work in perpetuating the music. Jerry and Helen Burke of Woodstock, Ga. received the Pioneer, Community Service and Icon awards while singer/guitarist Rick Smith and Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame staff member Carol Edwards were honored with Legend Awards.
“These Georgians have had a tremendous impact on the Carolinas,” said Burlan Dean Marsh, president. “Through live and radio performances, promoting events featuring South Carolina talent they all individually became part of the musical fabric of our communities.”
Marsh, a bass player, serves as president of the organization while banjo stylist J. Max McKee of Shelby, NC and performer Bob Wyatt of Rock Hill, SC are its founders.
“The purpose of our organization is to help musicians in need,” McKee said.
Wyatt said that it is through the teamwork of the board and members that the organization continues to grow.
The organization presented awards to numerous recipients throughout the course of the evening that incorporated musical performances.
Among the categories were Hall of Fame, Hall of Honor, Heritage Awards, Legends Awards, Pioneer Awards, Horizon Awards, Community Service Awards, Icon Awards, Band Awards, Special Awards and Media Awards.
Hall of Fame inductees include Frances C. Strait, Burlan Dean Marsh, Dan X. Padgett, Dwayne Ford, Jimmie Claude Carter, Rebecca Merli, and Gilbert Hames.
Hall of Honor inductees were Tom Griffith, Bobby Wray, Bruce Gibbins, James Soder, Tommy Kay, Billy Meridith, Roger Dale Owens, James Walt Ramey, Ralph Biggers, Steve Hubbs, Blake Stevens, and Michelle M. Osborne.
The late Carl Story was among the 10 Heritage Award honorees.
The organization honored Timber Ridge as Band of the Year; J. Max McKee for guitarist; David Heffner for mandolin; Burlan Dean Marsh for bass; Jim Reynolds for banjo; Dave McClellan and Roger Owens for Dobro ®; Don Armstrong for rhythm guitar; Melvin Roten for fiddle; Golden Valley Crusaders Gospel Band of the Year; Millard Edwards of WAXM as disc jockey; and Teena McKee as female vocalist.

SGM Radio Blog's "Top Ten" by Johnmark Grant

We are thrilled to share with you these mini-interviews with some great Southern Gospel artists! Check back often to see who is next on the SGM Radio Blog's Top Ten!

Johnmark Grant...by Johnmark Grant
Home: Southampton, United Kingdom
About Johnmark: Currently a youth worker, musician and song writer, Johnmark Grant has composed many songs and loves playing musical instruments. He is the son of Evangelist John Grant, has traveled since he was three days old, and gave his life to the Lord at a young age. Johnmark has traveled to many countries including: Barbados, Belgium, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden.
In all these countries, he has sung, preached and done youth work, in churches, and on the streets, sharing the Gospel for 21 years.

Johnmark Grant's Top Ten
1.Please tell us the name of your latest recording and your favorite song from that CD. What is the message behind this song?
My latest recording is a song I'm in the middle of writing, called There's a Brighter Day Up Ahead. The message is that it does not matter what you`re going through, you need to remember that for a little while there will be trials, but there will be a brighter day coming, as Jesus said.
2.What is one group highlight from the last 12 months?
My brother Daniel just had a brain operation and had tumours removed sucessfully. Through it all we trusted God and He brought my brother through.
3.What is the best city to visit?
Again so many wonderful places! I like Randers, Danmark, for a few reasons. First of all I have a lot of close friends there, and second it has the second largest Elvis Museum in the world! I'm sure Ernie Haase will agree thats a good enough reason to visit a town.
And,if you have ever been in Norway for their National day ( May 17th ) it's a sight to see with all the old clothes and children in the Street parades. It's a bit like the 4th of July in Usa.

4.Have you been on a mission trip? If you have, where did you go? If you haven’t, would you like to and where would you want to go?
Every Christian's life should be a mission trip, and every sinner their mission field. Yes, in the summer between my tours in Europe, I do a few weeks of Beach Missions.
5.What artist are you listening to right now? Who is in your player?
Miley Cyrus, Butterfly Fly Away, & The Climb.
6.Brush with greatness…who have you met that you couldn’t wait to tell your friends and family about?
I'd say meeting the late Oral Roberts and his daughter, Roberta Roberts.
My dad had meetings with the late Oral Roberts, and when Roberta Roberts and some students came to England years ago, she stayed in my Grandmother's home. (though I have not met either of them, my family has)

7.If you could visit any planet, which one would it be and why?
VY CANS MAJORIS: it's the largest planet in the Universe, and it makes the Earth look like a speck of dust compared to it!
8.What would be your fantasy venue, the one stage in the world where you would like to sing?
It would be on a Welsh Gaither Homecoming DVD, if they ever made one!
9. What is your favorite Bible verse?
Greater love hath no man that this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
10. Name a character trait or fruit of the spirit you would really like to develop in your life.
Patience

The "Better Halves" of Praise Incorporated Featured in This Month’s SGN Scoops Digital

FORT WORTH, Texas – Praise Incorporated is honored to have their “better halves” featured in this month’s issue of SGN Scoops Digital. Two wives of members of the popular quartet were featured in a section devoted to wives of Southern Gospel artists and industry personnel.

Called the Bus Mom/Quartet Version, Sharon Bares, wife of Praise Incorporated’s bass singer Greg Bares was quoted in the article as saying, “I thank God that He is allowing me to travel full time with a bus full of Godly men doing His work. These eyes of a quartet wife see these men serve when they can hardly stand on the stage because of back pain or they can hardly speak because of some illness and yet they serve, with joy because there is always room at the cross for just one more. We are a family, leaving our families behind, to bring the good news about God’s family to those without hope. When you experience the salvation of someone who was once dead and is now
alive forever, because of Jesus Christ, you can say with confidence that all the sacrifices are worth it, even if it were just for one.”

Also featured in the article was group member Steve Sam’s wife – Myrna. Being touted as the Stay-At-Home Quartet wife, Myrna juxtaposes Sharon’s thoughts by saying, “My advice to the wives and husbands left home to work to pay the bills and to keep the homefires burning? Pray hard. Work hard. Don’t forget to pay the cell phone bill. And for heaven’s sake, learn how to check your own Freon!”

Steve Sam of Praise Incorporated said, “Our wives are the most important aspect of our ministry. Without them – we wouldn’t be able to sing like we do. We are so honored that SGN Scoops Digital chose to recognize the work that not only our wives do, but the wives of hundreds of men who get on a bus every weekend to do the ministry of our Lord.”

Additional women featured in the February 2010 issue of Southern Gospel’s original all digital magazine include Debra Talley, Tori Taff (wife of Russ Taff), SoGospelNews.com’s Susan Unthank, and others.

MARIA ATKINS REJOINS REJOICE!

We are excited to announce that Maria Atkins has rejoined REJOICE! after a two-year “hiatus” from the road. Maria was the second soprano singer for the group for a five-year period before having to stop traveling for a time. Maria’s first weekend back with the group was February 13-14, and it was like time must have stood still for the two years she was away. “It just felt so natural to have her on stage with us; it was almost as if she had never left. The spirit in which she delivers a song’s message, as well as her ability to harmonize with other singers puts her in a special class of singers and we are blessed to be back on the road together with our friend,” says Sherri Vestal.

Rejoice! went from being a female trio to being a mixed quartet in September, 2008, when 18-year-old Tyler Vestal joined the group singing the bass part and playing the piano. It has been a treat to watch him grow as a musician and vocalist and see how people have embraced him. He has definitely become quite a crowd favorite!

Biblica Contracts Marchiano Ministries as Exclusive Distributor of Acclaimed Films: Matthew, Acts, Jesus the Christ

Dallas/Ft. Worth, TX—On a January morning in 1993 actor, Bruce Marchiano began a life-changing journey that continues to this day. Dressed in a rustic robe and sandals, he stood on a mountainside in Quarzazate, Morocco, surrounded by cameras and film crew, waiting for the director to call, “Action!” Cast to portray Jesus in the film, The Gospel According to Matthew, little did he know that morning that the Lord would call him to found his own ministry, then give him the breathtaking responsibility of carrying that very film and the love of Jesus explored therein, to a new, 2010 generation.

Biblica (formerly International Bible Society, IBS-STL), the rights holder of Matthew and other subsequently produced films using the NIV Bible text, has contracted with (Bruce) Marchiano Ministries for a fresh release of these films throughout USA/Canada. “We are pleased to announce our partnership with Marchiano Ministries,” writes Scott W. Bolinder, Biblica President of Global Publishing, “providing them with exclusive broadcast, commercial and online distribution rights, within the USA and Canada for Biblica’s audio-visual products, Matthew, Acts, Jesus the Christ, and Who is Jesus. As such, Marchiano Ministries is the sole and only authorized distributor to the commercial wholesale and retail channel for these products, all based on the NIV text. We look forward to a growing partnership between our ministries.”

First released in the USA/Canada in 1995, The Gospel According to Matthew was a pioneering vision, breaking new ground in Jesus films, the script being entirely word-for-word from Matthew, not even one syllable added or removed. “We created Matthew on the presumption that God’s Word is far more powerful than a screenwriter’s skill,” explains the film’s director, Regardt Van den Bergh. “Who can dare to think that any man could write a better script than God Himself by inspiration of His Spirit?”

But there was more. Led in prayer and research to The Book of Hebrews 1:9, which describes Jesus as “anointed with joy above anyone else,” both Marchiano and Van den Bergh felt to portray Jesus as a “Man of Joy” as opposed to traditional representations of Jesus as aloof and emotionless. This, along with presenting Jesus in a human authenticity and with deep, personal love for people, caused a revolution in perceptions of Jesus, not to mention countless lives changed. “I’ve been a Christian for twenty-five years,” as one testimonial declares, “but I never knew who Jesus truly was or how deeply He loved me till I saw Matthew.”

In time for Easter, Marchiano Ministries will first release Matthew in a 15th Anniversary (of its US debut) Edition, repackaged with bonus items and special features, including a 2 CD audio book, In the Footsteps of Jesus, in which Marchiano personally takes us behind the scenes of the making of Matthew and intimately shares his life-altering experience portraying Jesus.

Unto this end, Marchiano Ministries has contracted Nest Entertainment of Dallas, Texas as the exclusive distributor of Matthew to “faith-based” retailers and distributors. “We are thankful for this opportunity,” says Diana Shaw, Nest Specialty Sales Development Manager. “We are very enthusiastic about what Matthew has to offer, and believe the timing is right to partner in this.”

Marchiano himself stands amazed and humbled that God has given him this privilege, and to have the trust and partnership of both Biblica and Nest. “It is a great responsibility to be entrusted with God’s Word – with the Gospel, which is His chosen method to reveal His Son to a world that so desperately needs Him,” Bruce soberly reflects. “All these years later, not a day goes by that I don’t receive a testimony from some corner of the world about Matthew, so I’m very familiar with the work God is doing through it. And with an entirely new generation here in America that has yet to be introduced to it, I can’t wait to see what more God is planning to do through this new release!”

Marchiano’s own life was radically transformed through his experience playing Jesus in Matthew, causing him to transition away from secular acting to a speaking ministry that has taken him around the world, to African crusades and church building, to penning several books on the person of Jesus. Now, alongside this new contract with Biblica, he is currently involved in his most ambitious endeavor to date, as executive producer of another upcoming, word-for-word Gospel film, Jesus…No Greater Love. “All I ever wanted in life was to be an actor and win an Academy Award,” Marchiano muses, “but I guess the Lord had other things in mind!”

ALBUM TIMES LIKE THESE PRODUCED BY RASCAL FLATTS’ JAY DEMARCUS AND ALREADY SELECTED BY BILLBOARD AS “BEST BETS 2010: FACES TO WATCH”

Nashville, TN (February 17, 2010) —- Dove Award winning group, Austins Bridge, is gearing up to release their highly anticipated sophomore project, Times Like These, May 4, 2010. The CD was produced by Jay DeMarcus (Rascal Flatts). At the same time, Austins Bridge has signed with Jeff Robert and Associates for booking and Patton House Entertainment for management.

“Rarely does an artist come along that is so gifted, genuine and extremely talented,” says DeMarcus. “It was an absolute joy to make this record, as not only can these guys sing their tails off, they are truly anointed. Austins Bridge has a big, bright future.”

“It was not only a privilege and an honor to work with Jay DeMarcus,” says Austins Bridge, “but it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to absorb an experience that cannot be taught in any classroom or conference.” “We went into every studio session like little sponges, ready to soak up every morsel of information we could. Jay brings not only a lot of talent to the recording process, but a lifetime of proven success as well. We can’t wait to get this project out to a listening audience and we look forward to continuing to work with Jay on future projects.”

“When all of us at Patton House Entertainment heard the new music from Austins Bridge, we knew we wanted to be part of this band’s career,” says Andrew Patton, President, Patton House Entertainment. “Not only is Austins Bridge extremely talented but the hearts of these guys really put the meaning behind the lyrics. When you combine those elements with their powerful live show….you’re talking a major hit act here.”

“We are excited to be representing Austin’s Bridge,” says Randy Humphries, Artist Representative, Jeff Roberts & Associates. “When I saw them for the first time a few years ago I thought they were an amazing band! When I first heard Times Like These, I knew Jeff Roberts & Associates had to be involved in their career and we are looking forward to great things in the future with Austin’s Bridge.”

Times Like These features the strong harmonies of Austins Bridge that spotlight Christian lyrics with a deep Country/Bluegrass sound. The first single from the project, “Mercy,” will be going for adds at Christian radio February 19th. The song is an uplifting anthem to mercy being in your life when the going gets tough. Mercy never leaves when others walk away/Mercy’s there for you so you/don’t ever have to be afraid/When you’re feeling hopeless, abandoned, and lost/Mercy pleads your case before the cross/Mercy never leaves. Band members Baird and Rivers wrote two songs for the project, “Good Times” and “Hold Onto Jesus,” with Rivers also co-writing, “Dash Between The Dates.” Jay DeMarcus lent his songwriting efforts to the CD by co-writing the title track and “Angels.” The strength of the new album has already garnered the honor of “Best Bets 2010: Faces To Watch” by Billboard magazine.

Austins Bridge broke onto the national music scene with their debut self-titled album in 2007 and the strength of the project resulted in the band winning the 2008 Dove award in the category of Bluegrass Song of the Year, “He’s In Control.” They also received two additional 2008 Dove nominations for New Artist of the Year and Country Album of the Year.
