About The Freemans

History, experience and spiritual wisdom are three attributes that can be used to describe the foundation of the Freeman ministry. Deeply rooted with family, the Freemans experience spans 30+ years. From Darrell’s entrance at age 16 with his family’s group, the Pathways, to Chris’s award-winning teenage years with the Hinsons, the Freemans know the ins and outs of Southern Gospel music.

No doubt, Chris’s unique sound is the reason she was the youngest female artist ever to receive the coveted "Queen of Gospel Music” award two years in a row (’76, ’77) as voted by the readers of Singing News Magazine. In 1980, the lives of Darrel and Chris Freeman became one when they married on August 2nd. After singing with the Pathways for three years Darrell and Chris headed for Nashville and began the Freemans. Joe Freeman, Darrell’s cousin, soon joined them as the third part harmony, as well as their keyboard player. With this sound they have garnered tremendous growth and success.

In 1997, Darrell and Chris’s daughter, Misty, began playing acoustic guitar with the group on stage. Then in 1998, she began singing with them when they recorded Standing Out. Also on stage is Caylon Freeman, Darrell and Chris’s youngest child. He decided to join his family on the road full-time in 2002. He is now playing the drums and singing some with the group.

Now in their 20th year, the Freemans, still do approximately 250 dates a year, and continue to experience tremendous success.

Gold City News

Gold City email newsletter of February 11, 2013:

It’s been a great couple of weeks for Gold City. Since we last updated you, we’ve sang at TBN in Hendersonville, TN, Soddy Daisy, TN, McDonald TN, and took a trip to Palmetto, FL, where we sang once again for one of gospel music’s best promoters, Bill Bailey at his Winter Concert. We were with our friends, the Mark Trammell Quartet, The Freemans, Tony Gore, and Jeff and Sheri Easter. From there, we had two concerts each in GA and AL before heading the bus toward Jacksonville, FL to board a ship, which is where we will be for the next week on Templeton Tour’s Singing At Sea cruise to the Bahamas. Danny, Jerry, and Chuck will each have some of their family on the cruise, so this will make for a special time.

DID YOU CATCH US ON TV?

The concert at TBN mentioned above was a special tribute to songwriters that the Southern Gospel Music Guild produced for that television station. Gold City sang two songs that night–"Peter James and John" to honor songwriter Dianne Wilkinson and "I’m Not Giving Up" by Squire Parsons, another honoree of the evening. The show aired for the first time last Friday night, February 8th, but will be rebroadcast at other times. Check the station’s website, www.tbn.org for further broadcast information.

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

Gold City could not do what they do without the love and support of our wives, who are just as much a part of this ministry as we are. Without their sacrifices and their blessing for us to leave out each week, we could not pursue our calling, share our music and minister the gospel to a lost and dying world. We hope we show it more often than this one day, but especially on Valentine’s Day, we want to say to Barbara Riley, Holly Riley, Micki Pelfrey, Kelly Elliott, and Anjeanette Howe we love and appreciate you very much!

CHANGES

Most of you know by now, Dan Keeton announced his departure a few weeks ago to pursue his life-long dream of starting a non-profit agency for childhood victims of abuse. So, we’ve been sifting through all sorts of applications and audition mp3 files to locate a new tenor. We do not have any announcement to make at the present time, but those of you who seeing Gold City in the next couple of weeks will be seeing and hearing a new face and voice on stage. Robert Fulton is riding the bus for a while with us during our transition period. He’s got an amazing voice with a super high range. We’re not sure what fans are going to love more–his musical ability or his great personality. You decide while he’s visiting on the Gold City bus for a while as our tenor search winds down.

CHECK US OUT IN SINGING NEWS MAGAZINE

The February issue of Singing News has hit the newsstand. You can read a Valentine’s tribute to our wives on page 3. On page 46, our trip to Times Square Church in New York City is chronicled, complete with photos of this beautiful and historic place.

DANNY’S FAVORITE QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"We are all faced with a series of great opportunities brilliantly disguised as impossible situations." -Chuck Swindoll

THIS WEEK

Gold City will be on the Singing At Sea cruise from Feb. 11-15 this week, but we will keep you updated on all the latest news via Facebook. Make sure you "like" our page, "Gold City Quartet" today! Have a great week!

The Freemans Nominated for 3 SGM Fan Fair Awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – (March 15, 2011) – Southern Gospel favorites The Freemans have received three nominations in the 2011 SGM Fan Fair Awards. The SGM FanFair Awards nominees were announced earlier this month in a press release announcement.

The Freemans collectively received a nomination for Favorite Song of the Year (for their #1 hit “The Father & the Son”). Meanwhile, group matriarch Chris Freeman landed two individual nominations – Favorite Alto and Naomi Sego Living Legend Award.

The group won Favorite Song (for “Three Rugged Crosses”) and Favorite Alto (Chris Freeman) at last year’s awards ceremony.

“WOW! What a great surprise for us,” mentioned Chris Freeman. “We are so honored that our friends continue to name us among their favorites! Thank you to everyone who placed a vote for us! It means the world to us!”

The nominees in the SGM FanFair Awards were chosen by the readers of Christian Voice Magazine and attendees of the SGM FanFair. The winners for the awards will be announced on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at the Smoky Mountain Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee at the 7th Annual SGM FanFair.

For more information on how to vote, visit http://www.sgmfanfair.com .

These nominations come on the heels of the group’s impressive six nominations in the upcoming 2011 Absolutely Gospel Music Awards. The group earned nominations for Song of the Year and Country Song of the Year (also for “The Father & the Son”), Album of the Year and Country Album of the Year (for Evidence), and Best Live Performer. Chris Freeman also garnered her first nomination for Female Vocalist of the Year this year as well.

The Freemans recently scored their latest #1 single with the lyric driven and poignant song “The Father & the Son.” Penned by celebrated songwriter Dianne Wilkinson, “The Father & the Son” spent four consecutive weeks at #1 on the AbsolutelyGospel.com (formerly SoGospelNews.com) Top 40 Weekly Chart – the Southern Gospel’s most watched and respected weekly radio report.

“The Father & the Son” is the debut single from The Freeman’s much-anticipated new recording – Evidence. Four years in the making, Evidence is truly The Freemans’ most transparent and emotional release to date. Evidence features songs that were chosen in response to four pivotal years for the group, which were mired with multiple family deaths and extremely personal losses for individual group members. The Freemans Grace the Cover of SGN Scoops Digital

Group Debuts New Song From Much Anticipated New Album at 2010 SGN Music Awards Celebration

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Popular Southern Gospel artist The Freemans grace the cover of the highly popular internet magazine SGN Scoops Digital this month. The cover story, written by Southern Gospel journalist Lorraine Walker, is a two-part story that covers the group’s history and motivation.

Darrell Freeman of The Freemans said, “We were very excited when we were contacted by the magazine about being their cover story this month. We love getting to talk to folks and meeting new people. Lorraine was very gracious, and we have enjoyed the feedback from the article so far.”

In addition, the group talked at length about their new release – the follow-up to their most critically-acclaimed release to date – Eyes On the Prize.

“We are so excited about this new record,” mentioned Chris Freeman. “These songs are just dripping with God’s anointing. We can’t wait to see how He works through this new album.”

The Freemans debuted a new song from the release last week at the 2010 SGN Music Awards Celebration in which they were nominated for four awards. The song, titled “The Father and the Son,” was penned by award-winning songwriter Dianne Wilkinson and received a standing ovation the night of the performance.

Chris Freeman said, “The material that we are already staging is just getting an incredible response already. To see our own peers as well as the fans get behind the new material like this is just amazing. We are so grateful that God continues to use our ministry after all these years.”

“Since the awards were streamed this year, we have gotten a multitude of positive reactions to the song,” mentioned Darrell Freeman. “Thousands of people got to hear the song for the first time – and we are so thankful to the SGN Music Awards for allowing us the opportunity to perform on their excellent show.”

The new, currently untitled release has a tentative street date of May 2010. More information on that will be released at a later date.

The Freemans Honored with 4 SGN Music Award Nominations

The Freemans Honored with 4 SGN Music Award Nominations
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Popular Southern Gospel artist The Freemans were honored last week to receive four nominations in the 2010 SGN Music Awards. Nominees were announced last Thursday on SoGospelNews.com – host of the popular awards program.
The Freemans received nominations in a variety of categories. The group’s Top 10 hit – “Three Rugged Crosses” – earned the family their third consecutive nomination for Country Song of the Year (the group won the award in 2008 for the record-breaking #1 hit “He Chose Me”). Group patriarch Darrell Freeman also landed his third consecutive nomination for Producer of the Year (Artist). The group’s Christmas release – Christmas Memories – received a nomination for Special Event Project of the Year. (Darrell Freeman also received another nomination for producing that project.) Collectively, the group received their first Best Live Performer nomination – an award that is highly respected among other performers and fans.
Deon Unthank of SoGospelNews.com said, “Most of what makes The Freemans so beloved in this industry is their live shows. They have an infectious energy that fans have come to love. They are most deserving of this nomination – especially after utilizing more of the family in their vocals and arrangements.”
“We have to say ‘Thank You’ to the Unthanks and staff at SoGospelNews.com,” mentioned Chris Freeman of The Freemans. “We are blessed to have such great group of people so devoted to Southern Gospel music.”
The SGN Music Award nominees are chosen by the staff of SoGospelNews.com and select members of the Southern Gospel media and community. Starting on February 1, 2010 – fans will get the chance to vote for their favorite songs, albums, and artists in Southern Gospel music.
