'Fatherless'--First Novel From Dr. James Dobson--Futuristic Thriller Torn From Today's Headlines

FROM DR. JAMES DOBSON, ‘FATHERLESS,’ FAITH-BASED THRILLER LAUNCHES JAN. 15
Dobson, Co-Author Kurt Bruner Take Readers to a Suspense-Filled Future Threatened by Problems Torn From Today’s Headlines
FatherlessWorld.com

NASHVILLE – Nov. 27, 2012 – Set in the future but torn from today’s headlines comes Fatherless (FaithWords/Hachette Book Group, Jan. 15, 2013), a relentlessly-paced, faith-based, dystopian thriller from Dr. James Dobson and Kurt Bruner. Launching Jan. 15, the first in a three-book series, Fatherless weaves characters readers will care about into colliding plotlines drawn from key issues facing America now.

Fatherless marks the first fiction work from noted psychologist and radio host Dr. James Dobson. Author of the groundbreaking works The Strong-Willed Child, Bringing Up Boys and Bringing Up Girls, Dobson’s books have sold more than 25 million copies worldwide.

“Often the best way to communicate vital truths is to weave them into a story,” Dobson said. “The New Testament parables offer a great example of that. Fatherless takes the demographic realities of today, combines them with our nation’s economic, moral and ethical drift and imagines a future 30 years from now that’s at once familiar and frightening.”

In the page-turning Fatherless, it’s 2042, and a long-predicted tipping point has arrived: For the first time, the elderly outnumber the vigorous young creating an untenable economic and moral situation. How will a debt-crippled nation pay for the health care needs of a growing number of seniors living longer? As laws change allowing the elderly to end their lives, they become viewed as financial liabilities, as do the disabled. Jaundiced eyes turn toward any couple with more than two children, making monetary problems worse. Caught in an intensifying battle between competing cultural agendas is reporter Julia Davidson—a journalist seeking to revive a flagging career; influential young Congressman Kevin Tolbert, a Christian facing his own dilemmas; and a supporting cast of engaging characters who find themselves deep in an ominous conspiracy. In the dystopian tradition of 1984, Brave New World and The Hunger Games, Fatherless projects the headlines of today into the desperate choices of tomorrow.

“What happens in a world where growing up with the protective love of a father becomes the exception rather than the norm? What happens when the very old outnumber the very young?” Dr. Dobson asks. “Demographers tell us the decline in marriage and parenthood is fueling an unprecedented drop in fertility. The global population soon will begin to decline. We already see, in places such as Japan and Russia, that economic turmoil always accompanies dwindling population as the few young and healthy are burdened with the ballooning aging and feeble. The best projections show America on a trajectory to tip downward in a few short decades. This book is a fictional account of what current demographic, sociological and cultural shadows portend. But it’s also a celebration of God’s design for families.”

With a Jan. 15, 2013, publication date, Fatherless is available for pre-order now, and it will be followed by additional books in the series, Childless (summer 2013) and Godless (2014).

Dr. James Dobson is known around the world for his commitment to encouraging godly families. Author of more than 80 books, Dr. Dobson currently heads Dr. James Dobson’s Family Talk, a nonprofit ministry and radio program. For 14 years, he was an associate clinical professor of pediatrics at the University of Southern California School of Medicine and was on the attending staff of Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles for 17 years. He earned his doctorate in child development from USC. He founded and is chair emeritus of Focus on the Family.

For three decades The Bridge bookstore connected the people of Franklin, Tenn., with cherished stories and with Charlie and Donna Barton, the store’s owners. And the store connected them to each other. But not all stories starting at The Bridge had happy endings. Five years earlier, Molly and Ryan were two college students united in a shared faith, love of music and an undeniable attraction to each other. The two were separated by circumstances that cut their story short and left them with what looked to be a lifetime of questions.

When a hundred-year flood devastates the town and nearly destroys The Bridge, Charlie loses spirit and begins to doubt whether his work in books has mattered. As Christmas approaches, another tragedy strikes and all hope seems lost. Molly and Ryan return to Franklin, neither expecting to see the other, and both needing a miracle. Can the people of Franklin rally around The Bridge and find the second chances they all need? The story of The Bridge reminds us that our love for books matters. This story for our times will stay in your heart forever.

What happens to bookstores in the age of digital publishing?—Karen Kingsbury’s The Bridge is more than an inspiring novel, it’s a love letter to small, independently owned bookstores battling for their place in a changing industry and beloved by those who thrill at the touch of a paper page.

‘OCTOBER BABY’ NOVEL—IN STORES SEPT. 1

CNN Ranks ‘October Baby’ Among ‘15 Most Impressive Box Office Performances’ for 2012

ASHVILLE – July 18, 2012 – OCTOBER BABY, a limited-release indie film, surprised moviegoers and critics alike when, against stiff competition, it opened this February at No. 8 at the box office. The film’s sensitive story about the value of life—wrapped in humor, romance and drama—earned it a spot among CNN’s 15 Most Impressive Box Office Performances for 2012.

Now, on Sept. 1 from B&H Publishing Group, comes the hit film’s novelization. Fans will be eager to know that October Baby the novel delves deeply into characters’ backgrounds, taking readers on an extended journey through their lives, and still packs the movie’s emotional punch and entertainment.

“In October Baby the novel fans and newcomers get the same charm, the same uplifting story, with a whole lot more,” B&H Acquisition Editor Julie Gwinn said. “The deeper journey with these characters moves closer to the tagline for both book and film: ‘Every Life Is Beautiful.’”

October Baby is written by New York Times best-selling author Eric Wilson and the film’s co-writer Theresa Preston. Wilson is well known to Christian fiction readers for his novelization of the hit films from the Kendrick brothers, Fireproof, Facing the Giants and Flywheel. He also writes original novels at the intersection of the spiritual and physical worlds. For first-time screenwriter Preston, October Baby extended her passion to create stories that move and inspire.

October Baby is the inspiring story of Hannah, a college student whose rising anxiety and sudden physical collapse uncover surprising news about her birth. Hannah learns from her parents that she was adopted, having survived a failed abortion attempt. Bewildered and angry, Hannah turns to her oldest friend, Jason. Encouraged by his adventurous spirit, she joins his friends on a road trip, now her journey to find her hidden past and hope for the future. Along the way, Hannah finds that every life is beautiful, and that life can be far more than anything we plan.

The film that inspired the book made it to CNN’s Impressive Box Office list alongside megahits such at THE AVENGERS and THE HUNGER GAMES. CNN said, “The film surprised analysts with an eighth-place finish in its debut weekend, after earning $1.7 million from 390 theaters. . . . what makes OCTOBER BABY’s run so impressive is that it reached that level with minimal media attention and no buzz in New York or Los Angeles, where many indies thrive.”

October Baby is a trade paperback book; it will be available at Christian retailers nationwide and online. Suggested list price is $15.99.
