Beyond The Ashes' Bus Catches Fire In The Night

Nashville, TN (July 30, 2011) – Group members and road crew of vocal trio, Beyond The Ashes (BTA) were awakened in the middle of the night by a bus fire, while parked and asleep for the night in the WALMART parking lot in Marshfield, MO. The bus, an MCI tour bus, and its contents are severely damaged, but everyone in the bus miraculously escaped without injury.

Close friend and ministry advisor, Dusty Wells, was traveling with the group. He expressed that he awoke to the smell of smoke. He feels sure that God woke him from His sleep. He was able to get everyone safely off the bus. Road manager, Rob Estep, immediately called 911. The fire department arrived quickly to extinguish the fire and check on the health of the bus' occupants.

Anthony Facello (group's founder and tenor singer) shares, "We are grateful beyond words for GOD's protection over us through this very scary and emotional experience. We have, once again, seen His Hand of faithfulness to us. Certainly the name of this group, Beyond The Ashes, takes on a more powerful meaning than ever today. Although we know we face serious challenges as a result of the physical losses associated with this event, we are overwhelmingly glad to be safe and well, and we are trusting God through this trial. Please remember us in prayer as we work through the details of the situation. A special thanks to every one for your words of encouragement and your prayers."

The star-studded grand finale of World of Bluegrass Week (Sept. 26 – Oct. 2) will present the talents of more than 60 headline acts on the Main Stage, the Masters Workshop Stage and at the Grand Master Fiddler Championship—thanks to the sponsorship of L.R. Baggs, Martin Guitars, Martha White, Knee Deep in Bluegrass and WSM-AM 650.

The music is amazing enough on its own, but along with that we’re also planning Celebrity Jams on Friday and Saturday mornings Sept. 30 and Oct. 1; a “Name that Blue Grass Boy” trivia competition for fans Saturday morning, Oct. 1 at 10:30 a.m.; and a slate of discussion groups and workshops on everything from sharing festival memories and photos, music licensing for events and pre-war banjos to a “Going on the Road without Letting Yourself Go” exercise session, strings and instrument set-up with break-out groups for individual instruments, recording acoustic instruments, the crosspicking guitar style of George Shuffler, how to start an instrument lending library, a session on what songwriters and writers can learn from the music of The Beatles, and a thought-provoking discussion led by The Infamous Stringduster’s Chris Pandolfi and Emilee Warner of Crash-Media on “big tent bluegrass”—the concept of welcoming bands and fans across the bluegrass-influenced spectrum from old-time music to jam grass.

On Friday, Sept. 30 at 3 p.m. former Blue Grass Boy Blake Williams, of The Expedition Show will host a special event called “Tell Us Your Bill Monroe Story.” Friends and colleagues of Monroe will be invited to get things rolling, and then we’ll open the mic to anyone in the room with a story or memory to share. We’ll be videotaping, with participant’s permission, for future use on Bluegrass Nation and the International Bluegrass Music Museum archives.
Proceeds from Fan Fest ticket sales benefit the Bluegrass Trust Fund, established to help bluegrass professionals during times of emergency need, as well as support IBMA’s educational and marketing efforts during the rest of the year. All artists appearing at Fan Fest donate their time and talents for the cause.

Brian Alvey joins The Talleys

Hi, everyone! You see me pop up around here, especially when I’m doing posts from the National Quartet Convention. Earlier this afternoon, I talked with Roger about a change you’re going to be seeing in the Talley Trio soon.

Daniel: I heard you mentioned earlier this week that Brian Alvey will be joining the group. Is this true?

Roger: We’ve known for a long time that Brian is an extremely talented individual. He has been working with us for the past year, behind the scenes, doing marketing and promotion, and helping with a lot of things that we’re involved in. Now that he and Lauren are married, we’ve decided that we’re going to take advantage of his talents and have him join us in the road, on stage. We feel that he has real calling to share not only singing and playing, but through his songwriting and his speaking ability as well. We’re going to be having him fill a wide variety of roles.

Daniel: With four people on stage, will you continue to go by the Talley Trio?

Roger: We will just be The Talleys. Some songs will be trios, and some will be four-part, but it will not just be the Talley Trio.

Daniel: Brian is a tenor singer; will you be singing bass?

Roger: Now, obviously, I’m not going not to suddenly become a bass singer. There are a lot of parts that I can sing, but bass is not one of them! So don’t look for a traditional quartet sound.

Daniel: Could you tell us a little about Brian’s background in Southern Gospel?

Roger: He has sung with Southern Sound, Beyond the Ashes, and Tribute Quartet. He has played instruments on stage with Southern Sound and Tribute Quartet, and written several songs for Tribute Quartet, including the hit single “That’s Why I Love Him So.”

Daniel: Will Brian be playing instruments on stage with the Talleys?

Roger: Yes. He plays a wide variety of instruments, including piano, bass, and acoustic and electric guitars, and we’ll be doing more live music with him playing some. On some songs, we’ll do four-part harmony, and different trios on others. We’ll just have a much bigger variety on stage.

Daniel: And for the question everyone’s wondering, by this point: When will he start?

Roger: We have had a rehearsal or two already. We’re working on some of the songs that we are currently singing. We hope to be ready to debut this new sound by September 1st. This fall, we will begin work on a new recording with the four of us.

We are excited about what he will bring to our team.

Early Harvest Signs with Crescendo Gospel Music Management

{ CGMM} Early Harvest Signs with Crescendo Gospel Music Management: Zack Swain is proud to announce the signing of, new gospel music duo, Early Harvest.
Russ Nottingham of Early Harvest states “We are very excited and consider it an honor, a privilege, and a blessing from God to be able to work with Zack and all the staff at Crescendo Gospel Music Management. After talking with him, we believe that he lives his life and runs his company based on integrity and honesty which is what we’ve been searching for. We were taken for a ride, so to speak, by a few different companies out there before meeting up with Zack. We were ready to give up on ever finding a company with the same Christian values, morals and convictions that we have until meeting him. We look forward to working with Zack and for what we hope and pray will be a long professional relationship as well as considering him a Christian brother and friend!
Zack Swain states; Early Harvest is exactly what Crescendo Gospel Music Management is looking for. Early harvest is a fresh new duo with a country flare that will not disappoint any SGM listener but more importantly they are about taking the gospel to a lost and dying world in a way that this industry hasn’t seen before. I am very excited to see where God leads us on this journey and I can’t wait to start working with this extremely talented duo!

After one of the most devastating storms to ever sweep across our country Wendy and Tony Word are reaching out to help. Wendy states " I recently toured the tornado damage in my home state of Alabama and was left devastated by the damage this storm had caused. As I drove through Pleasant Grove, all I wanted was to be able to take the hurt away from many that had lost everything even their loved ones. I was especially moved by a message spray painted on a wall of one of the few houses that had anything still standing. It simply read " WE LIVED". I couldn't help but think of all of the spiritual storms that we all face that try to destroy us but, with God, "WE LIVE"

The new cd entitled “Greater Is The Grace” was arranged and produced by Jason Clark of The Nelons. Jason wrote the title cut for the project as well. Now the Lord has blessed me to be able to sing with my husband, Thom, and my sister Bethany Brewer.” Melody’s sister sings the alto while her husband sings the male part of the trio. The Stephens are assisted on stage during live performances by Larry Johnson on keyboard.

Travelling with The Hyssongs - Retro SGM Radio

TRAVELING WITH THE HYSSONGS
By Sandi Duncan Clark

With more than two hundred concert dates each year, Dell, Susan, Richard and Kelly Hyssong are rarely home more than a week at a time. The Hyssongs (pronounced ‘his-songs’ and not to be confused with the male trio from Tennessee) are one of the busiest Southern Gospel groups in the industry. They tour extensively throughout the United States sharing the message of Jesus Christ.

While this family hails from the great state of Maine, Southern Gospel has always been their musical style. Dell Hyssong tells us, “Southern Gospel is pretty popular in the north east. I grew up singing with my father’s group, The Harborside Quartet, all around the state of Maine, and I’ve always loved the music.”

Dell is an ordained minister who pastored in the north east for more than twenty five years. He shared, “Susan grew up the daughter of a missionary family in Alaska. She majored in sacred music in college and plays organ and piano. When we met and were married, it was natural for us to minister together. Since we both had a musical background, part of that ministry has always been music.”

During Dell’s ministry his family helped provide music for his church services. “In college I formed a Gospel quartet and continued to sing. I also played trumpet,” Dell said. “I would do both in our church services and Susan would play piano.”

Richard Hyssong is Susan and Dell’s twenty-five year old son who has grown up in the family ministry. “Richard was singing in church when he was just two years old,” Dell said. “He loved music and began taking music lessons at the age of four. He learned to play keyboard and trombone and has always loved people. Performing Gospel music and touching people’s lives is a natural for Richard. He also does our booking and keeps us very busy.”

In 1996 the family was asked to provide music for a four-day service at a sister church. “After that service we kept getting calls to do music for other special events at other churches,” Dell told us. “The more we shared our music and shared the Lord, the more God dealt with us about venturing out more with the music.”

Dell resigned his church and in 2001 the family accepted God’s call into full-time music ministry. They travel all across the United States sharing their music and their testimonies.

In early 2005, Richard met his wife Kelly at a church where the Hyssongs sang. On October 1 of that year they were married and Kelly joined the family ministry. They are expecting their first child in July of this year.

While the Hyssongs’ musical style is traditional Southern Gospel, their arrangements vary, appealing to all age groups. They use arrangements that are appropriate for all events, from church services, to concert stages to fair dates.

Tight family harmony and a smooth blend is their trademark. Dell sings baritone, Susan sings alto and Richard sings lead but they often switch parts allowing each one to be featured on a song. This versatility changes the Hyssong’s sound and adds more variety to their presentation.

Dell, Susan and Richard also bring exciting instrumentals to their stage performance. Richard and Dell play trombone and trumpet, while Susan plays the keyboard on some songs. “Sometimes Richard will join me on the keyboard playing four-hand piano,” Susan stated.

The family has a several recordings and DVDs of live performances to their credit. These include an instrumental CD and two solo projects by Richard. “We have recorded five projects with Shane Roark at Chapel Valley Studio,” Dell shared.

Their new recording, “REJOICE,” was released in February on the Sanctuary label. Each of the group has a different favorite on the project. Susan’s favorite is “The King Is Coming,” while Richard’s is “Stay Close To Me.” Kelly’s favorite is “Living Water” and Dell likes my favorite song on the project, “God Is There.” This powerful song was written by Chris Binion and went out to Gospel radio in mid-March. You should be hearing this song on your local Gospel radio station.
The Hyssongs had a busy, exciting year in 2007. “It’s a thrill for us to travel to so many places and meet so many people,” Kelly said. “We performed on a cruise to Alaska and also one to the Bahamas last year. It was exciting to attend the Southern Gospel Music Fan Fair in the spring and to sing on a showcase at the National Quartet Convention last September.”

This year is proving to be just as busy and exciting. The family is again booked on the cruises and appeared in Chattanooga at Fan Fair. They will again appear on the Artist Showcase in September at NQC in Louisville, Kentucky.

While all of these special events are exciting, Dell tells us that the biggest thrill for him is when they have the opportunity to lead someone to Christ. “During the year we usually see between 100 and 150 people accept Christ,” Dell said.

“My biggest thrill is when we get letters from someone or when we return to an area we have been before and we hear the testimony of how a song from our CDs touched a life long after we are gone,” Susan said.

Richard told us, “I get excited when I hear one of our songs on the radio. It’s exciting that DJs play our music, and that God can use that to reach more places than we can travel each year.”

“We are so humbled that God is using our ministry in this way,” Dell continued. “God gives each of us a unique talent and a unique place to serve Him. Our family wants to use our talent for Him and go wherever He sends us. We always pray that He keeps us focused on His will.”

When you attend a Gospel music event with the Hyssongs you will experience exciting music, hear their testimonies and you’ll enjoy the humor they share as a family. You will experience their heart for the ministry and you’ll come away blessed.

You may have the Hyssongs at your next Gospel music gathering by phoning Richard at 207-236-6461 or visit their web site at www.thehyssongs.com

Legacy 5 Says Goodbye to Bus Driver, Gary Buckner

Good Bye, Gary

It's never too late to to accept change. The only constant in life is change. In nature, in society, in relationships, at work, things change. And they change constantly. See it as the larger picture, as normal. Don't fight it. Adapt to it.

So, today I will try and embrace change. Often I don't like the process of change, but like it or loath it, we better expect it. Change will come.

After nearly six years as the driver for Legacy Five, Gary Buckner has left to pursue an opportunity to drive for a coach leasing company out of Nashville.
Gary drove faithfully for us and logged several hundred thousand miles with Legacy Five. We love Gary and will miss him, but we wish nothing for him but the best.

I must also take this opportunity to thank Gary's wife, Sharon. Sharon kept a lot of the driving records, logs and paperwork and once a quarter would file that mountain of information with the various state agencies in order to comply with state and federal regulations. Sharon was a tireless worker and I don't even know the extent of work she did on our behalf.

Thank you Gary and Sharon. We love you and will miss you.

Our bus drivers become an extended part of the Legacy Five family. Please join us in prayer that God will send the next family member along soon. Driving the bus is no small task and we need just the right person. So, please pray and we will trust God to send just the right person our way.

Til We Meet Again,

Scott Fowler

Driven Quartet Takes Home 3 SGN Scoops Diamond Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – (July 7, 2011) – Popular Southern Gospel group Driven Quartet were on hand to accept their very first Diamond Awards last week. The group was one of the evening’s big winners – taking home the first three Diamond Awards of their career.
Driven Quartet was awarded the highly coveted Album of the Year for their self-titled debut album. The group was also awarded Favorite Christian Country Group and Favorite Artist Website.
Jason Funderburk of Driven Quartet responded, “What an honor it was for us to receive these awards. We’d like to thank Rob Patz and the staff of SGN Scoops Digital for putting on a top notch awards show and the fans who took the time to vote for us! Awards have never been what this group has been about – but we are truly honored that you would validate us in such a way! Thank you!”
Driven Quartet also performed their hit single “Between the Rock and Hard Place” at the awards show and were a featured presenter.
The 2011 SGN Scoops Diamond Awards were handed out at the 3rd Annual Branson Gospel Music Revival last week at the Tri-Lakes Center in Branson, Missouri.
Driven Quartet saw a strong surge in radio support for their latest single. The song – titled “Story of My Life” – charted on various industry publications over the last couple of months. “Story of My Life” is the second single from Driven Quartet’s much-talked-about self-titled release and is the first single from the group to hit Southern Gospel radio in over a year.
This new single is the follow-up to the group’s previous hit single “Between a Rock and a Hard Place.” The song was written by John Darin Rowsey and Justin Rivers and did exceptionally well for the group. The song reached Top 20 on both the Gospel Music News Top 100 (#14) and SoGospelNews.com (now AbsolutelyGospel.com) Top 40 Weekly Chart (#12) and Top 40 on the Singing News Top 80 (#27). The song also charted exceptionally well on the SouthernGospelTimes.com Top 40 Fan Chart.

Josh McDowell Partners with Timothy Eldred and the Pray With Youth Campaign

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., July 7, 2011 /Christian Newswire/ -- The Pray With Youth(tm) campaign is a stand alone event for churches and faith communities who designate 9.11.11 to commit their congregations to helping young people find their place in the cause of Christ.

McDowell put his name and reputation on the line with Eldred 4 years ago when they announced Pray21(tm) (www.pray21.org) and called the church to a 21-day challenge which echoes this global campaign. Over 3,000 churches joined the 2007 challenge and an estimated 75,000 young leaders were prayed with during Pray21(tm).

"We are honored to have Josh's support again. He clearly recognizes the needs of this generation," says Timothy Eldred, President of Christian Endeavor International* ( www.christianendeavor.com) and founder of Pray With Youth(tm). "While many people look to "flash" in order to attract youth, Josh knows we need to return to foundational truths. Prayer is our problem; there's not enough of it happening. It's time to stop just praying 'for' and 'about' youth and start praying with them. That's more significant than we realize and just plain simple."

Many churches worldwide will begin the campaign on Sunday, August 21, and pray with youth over a 21 day period. Young people will connect with adult prayer partners who are dedicated to walking through this experience with youth ages 12-21. They will read, journal, and pray individually each day during that time and meet weekly to compare notes and see where and how God is speaking and revealing His call on their lives.

"Join me and take a moment to connect your congregation to this worldwide campaign from my friends at Christian Endeavor International, said McDowell. Please participate in this 21-day prayer challenge. I know we can have a real impact on the youth of this nation and beyond." he continued.

For over 40 years, the Josh McDowell Ministry, a division of Campus Crusade for Christ International, has focused on serving and equipping churches, pastors, families and people everywhere in raising generations of purpose-driven Christians who know what they believe, why it is true, and how to live out their Christian faith. To find out more about Josh McDowell and his ministry visit Josh.org.

Churches can register on praywithyouth.com and download all the necessary materials for the campaign free of charge. The goal this year is that 10,000 churches would participate and 250,000 young people would be prayed with to understand their unique calling today. Eldred concludes, "We believe that is an attainable goal, but we also believe it is just the beginning of what God can do when we trust Him for the results. Perhaps we'll see millions of youth recognize who they are in Christ."

Sam Bush to Host 22nd International Bluegrass Music Awards

Nashville, Tenn.….Award-winning artist, band leader, songwriter and mandolin monster Sam Bush will host the 22nd annual International Bluegrass Music Awards on Thursday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m. at Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium.

“It is my pleasure to return as the host for the 2011 IBMA Awards,” Bush says. “As a bluegrass fan and fellow Kentuckian, it’s especially important to me in the 100th year anniversary of Bill Monroe’s birth. I look forward to spending the evening with the nominees and the winners, as this is their special night.”

Grammy Award winning multi-instrumentalist Sam Bush doesn’t seem old enough to be a musical legend. He’s not…but he is. Alternately known as the “King of Telluride” and the “Father of Newgrass,” Bush has been honored with numerous awards from IBMA and the Americana Music Association. It’s especially fitting that Bush, one of bluegrass music’s premier mandolin players, will host the IBMA Awards the year of the Bill Monroe Centennial. Bill Monroe, known as the Father of Bluegrass Music, would have turned 100 on September 13, 2011. The realm of his influence is vast and his accomplishments are many, but like Sam Bush three decades later, one thing Monroe did was ride the small, uniquely shaped, eight-stringed mandolin like a rocket into a new realm of musical expression the world had never heard before.

Recognitions like the Lifetime Achievement Award from the AMA for Bush in 2009 have been “overwhelming and humbling,” he says, but honors are not what drive him. “I didn’t get into music to win awards,” he says. “I’m just now starting to get somewhere. I love to play and the older I get the more I love it. And I love new things.”

Among those new things are the growing group of mandolin players that identify Bush as their musical role model in much the same way he idolized Bill Monroe and Jethro Burns. “If I’ve been cited as an influence, then I’m really flattered because I still have my influences that I look up to,” Bush says. “I’m glad that I’m in there somewhere.”

He’s being humble, of course. Bush has helped to expand the horizons of bluegrass music, fusing it with jazz, rock, blues, funk, reggae and other styles. He’s the co-founder of the genre-bending New Grass Revival and an in-demand musician who has played with everyone from Emmylou Harris and Bela Fleck to Charlie Haden, Lyle Lovett and Garth Brooks. And though Bush is best known for his jaw-dropping skills on the mandolin, he is also a three-time National Junior Fiddle Champion and Grammy Award-winning vocalist. Last year a song he co-wrote, “The Ballad of Stringbean and Estelle,” was one of the five nominees for IBMA Song of the Year.

“In the acoustic world I’ve been pretty lucky to play with almost every one of my heroes. I’ve gotten to play with Bill Monroe, Doc Watson, Earl Scruggs…. I’ve been to the mountain,” Bush says, smiling. But his greatest contribution may be his impact on the future. “I’m secure with what I can do and I know what I can’t do,” he says. “You just have to stand there and applaud the great young talent. Chris Thile, Wayne Benson, Shawn Lane, Matt Flinner, Ronnie McCoury, Mike Marshall—they play in ways that I can’t play,” he says of the current field of mandolin players. “I’m hoping to be around for the next generation that comes along after that group. That’s going to be something. The music keeps evolving.”

“It’s crazy to think about,” Bush says of his influence. “I’m proud to be part of a natural progression in music. And I hope to still be playing 30 years from now.”

That said, it’s not surprising that Bush still has goals. “I want to grow as a songwriter, as a song collaborator,” he says. “There are still a lot of things I haven’t discovered about playing mandolin. I want to be able to be secure in the styles that I know how to play well, but I also want to explore other styles that I haven’t learned yet. I want to improve as a singer,” he adds. “I have to work harder on singing than I do on playing.”

“As long as I’m alive I hope I have the ability to play,” says Bush, a two-time cancer survivor. When the ability to play is taken away, it’s humbling. It teaches you a lesson: don’t take it for granted.”

Circles Around Me, Bush’s current album on the Sugar Hill label, is an aurally inspiring mix of bluegrass favorites and complementary new songs. “It felt right at this moment in my life to go back and re-visit some things that I’ve loved all my life, which is bluegrass and, unapologetically, newgrass,” says Bush. “After all these years of experimenting —and there’s experimentation on this record too —I’ve come full circle.” Produced by Bush, the 14-song set includes appearances by Del McCoury, Edgar Meyer, Jerry Douglas and New Grass Revival co-founder Courtney Johnson (posthumously). The album also features the phenomenal talent of Bush’s band: Scott Vestal, Stephen Mougin, Byron House and Chris Brown.

News from The Perrys

News From Libbi Perry Stuffle, from The Perry's Email Newsletter:

I know, I know it's been a while since I've written! Seems like time just gets away from me, the older I get. :0) We have been so blessed to have a busy schedule this year. We've just returned from a 10 day vacation, which was very much needed! Now, we are full force (Lord willing) until December.

I know everyone is wanting a update on Tracy and how he's progressed since his heart attack and open heart surgery last August. Tracy as of date has lost 97 lbs!!! He has three more go and then he will be in the battle to keep it off. Tracy is regaining his strength back every day. He went to the driving range this week and was pleased with how he did, so now he's ready to hit the golf course! He is off ALL insulin! He takes metformin twice a day. He's been very disciplined about what he eats and that makes my job a lot easier. We do ask those of you that want to bring snacks and food to him on the road, please make sure it is low fat, low carb and low sodium. I know, that it's hard to find stuff that is all three, but it can be done. With summer here, we are love being able to get fresh veggies, so please feel free to bring all the tomatoes, cucumbers, squash, zucchini, onions, beans, lettuce, sweet potatoes, red bell peppers, and any other veggies you want to get rid of to our bus!! :0) Thanks once again for all of the prayers, cards, letters, emails, texts and love gifts. You will never ever know what each one has meant to us. Please continue to pray for us as we continue on this journey to a better and healthier lifestyle change.

A lot of people have ask what Tracy eats daily, so I have created a Facebook page that shows a lot of his meals with the recipes of how I fixed them. It's found at www.facebook.com/eattolivelibstuffle. We welcome any advice, healthy recipes and we also encourage others. A lot of people like us struggle with being overweight and eating healthy, so here we can all encourage each other!
