An Open Letter From Karen Peck Gooch

Hey Friends:)

My husband, Rickey Gooch, is the strongest and hardest working man I know. It is an honor and a blessing to be his wife.

A few weeks ago, Rickey discovered a knot in his neck. After consultation with his doctor Rickey was prescribed two rounds of antibiotics. After the knot did not go away, additional testing was ordered.

After a neck scan, two biopsies, a CT scan and a PET scan, Rickey was diagnosed with squamous carcinoma, a type of cancer. Thank the Lord, the cancer is confined to Rickey's left tonsil area and has not spread anywhere else within his body. As a result of this diagnosis, Rickey will begin a series of treatments in the coming days. The doctors feel very confident that the treatments will be successful and this will soon be behind us.

During the weeks Rickey and I have been dealing with this, the Lord has shown us such mercy and grace. He has reminded us of His sovereignty and even when we were at our lowest, we could feel His loving arms wrapping around us and covering us with peace that surpasses all understanding. Truthfully, we would not have made it this far without the Lord. Even though we are devastated, we realize the Lord is strengthening us more every day as we move forward.

Because of this situation Rickey and I stayed home for a few days to attend doctors appointments. We are so proud of our group, though, as they continued to travel to honor our commitments. Rickey and I want to offer our sincere appreciation to Katy Peach for filling in for me and doing an amazing job. Also, we give special thanks to Susan, Jeff, Matthew, Kari, Tripp King, and Danny Jones for stepping up and doing what needed to be done. Audiences were blessed and we were thrilled to learn that some even accepted Jesus as their Savior. Praise the Lord!

Rickey and I will be back on the road this weekend. We want to thank everyone for the love you have shown our family. We love y'all dearly. Please continue to pray for Rickey. We know that God will make this trial a blessing.

Retro SGM Radio: Women of Substance Series Featuring Susan Whisnant

{Editor's Note: This series on the Women of Southern Gospel by Lorraine Walker began in the Fall of 2007 and continued into 2008 on SGM Radio website. We hope you enjoy this feature on Susan Whisnant!)

This month we continue our series on the wonderful women in Southern Gospel Music. Legends such as Vestal and Eva Mae made their mark in the past while current artists like Connie Hopper, Lou Wills Hildreth and Elaine Wilburn continue to make theirs. All of them are women who have raised the bar of talent, faith and substance for those in the next generation.

This “next generation” includes women such as Karen Peck Gooch, Kim Greene Hopper and Susan Whisnant, who are now becoming legends in their own time. These true women of substance have not only developed their own talents, style and sound, they are also known for their Godly walk and their personal standards of morality. This month, SGM Radio had the privilege of talking to Susan Whisnant.

The Whisnants began as a family group over 35 years ago and Susan joined the group when she started dating Jeff. The group became a trio, with Susan, Jeff, and Jeff’s brother John. For over 20 years, this trio has seen few changes in their lineup and minor changes in their sound; but for Susan Whisnant fans, the voice and grace of this lady have made The Whisnants legendary in Southern Gospel.

All of the ladies we have been chatting to this point have been sure of their calling to this ministry from an early age. Susan’s assurance came a little later. “I started singing when I was five, with my Mom and Dad, in a quartet called The Melody Singers in South Carolina”, says Susan. “They traveled extensively in their region. I’d get up and sing a song called, ‘After All’. Then I went to college for two years and I continued to sing with my Mom and Dad. We did a lot of Bible Conferences; but as far as doing this for a living, I didn’t think I ever would.”

Susan continues, “Then I met Jeff Whisnant who had been singing since he was six with his Mom and Dad. We started dating and our hearts meshed, and the desire to do something more with this was very much a part of what we were. It was from that point that we said, “Lord, if You will make a way, we’ll go, we’ll do it. Even if it’s not easy, You just lead the way and we are going to follow. And that’s what we’ve done.”

Susan remembers what it was like when it wasn’t easy and The Whisnants were still a struggling young group. She has these words of advice to offer to new gospel artists. “Thirteen years ago at the National Quartet Convention when my baby was ten months old, we had a little 8x10’ booth, and I could not even afford to put carpet in it. Somebody gave me black and white floor covering that we had to piece together. The only thing we could afford was lawn chairs to sit along the side, just Walmart plastic chairs. And I thought, ‘Lord, thank You for helping us be here. Nobody knows us, but thank You so much for letting us be here’.”

“If I could give advice to any group, it is to be faithful where God has placed you. Even when quitting seems easy and it seems like nobody knows you, little is much when God is in it. And if you will be faithful in the little things, before you can even thank Him; He is giving you greater things. You turn around and you just know that it’s all from Him. I encourage every group to just hang in there and stay faithful.”

Susan shared some of her thoughts on the brand new groups in Southern Gospel. “Paid In Full, the group that won the Horizon Group Award this year, they have just stolen my heart. But there are a lot of really great up-and-coming groups right now. There is some great talent out there”.

Susan’s wonderful talent and expression have won her many fans over the years, and her sweet personality has brought her many friends. Young women entering the industry look up to Susan as one of the female leaders in Southern Gospel. To these ladies, Susan offers this advice: “I’m always amazed when girls tell me they look up to me, because there are many women in the industry that I look up to and it just blows my mind. I think Southern Gospel music is the best music anywhere. I think the Lord requires us to dress our best, to be classy, to present it in such a way that’s appealing to the lost. We don’t need to look like the world to present the best Gospel. That’s just how I feel.”

“I think it ought to be done with class”, Susan continues. “’Lord help us always to remember that we are representing the King!’ [Gospel music] needs our best package all the way around: the best talent, the best singing we can give, and the best dress we can wear. Some people say that doesn’t matter, but we are representing the King, and I sure wouldn’t go to the palace if I wasn’t dressed in my best.”

“It’s an honour to be able to see young kids look up to us, it’s really an honour. But I’m just flesh, and I want people to remember: the only difference between them and me is I hold a mic. We are just like them.”

Susan mentions that there are ladies in Southern Gospel that she looks up to as well. “I’m going to say Karen Peck [Gooch]. Even though there isn’t much age difference [between us], I’ve always looked up to her. She presents herself as a lady.”

“Connie Hopper, to me, last night [during NQC] looked like the Statue of Liberty. She is just so classy. She’s an elegant lady every time I see her, without fail. She’s one of my heroes”. Susan continues, “There are some heroes that have really made an impact on my life, those two especially. If I could be like them, it would be an honour.”

Susan Whisnant is not only known for her talent and class, but also for the compassion and love for others that shines from her eyes. She talks about what the Lord has been sharing with her: “People are hurting. People’s lives are falling apart. And a lot of them are going to leave this concert and go home to broken homes. They are going to go home to kids that are wayward; their husband or wife is going to want a divorce; they are going to face death. With that in mind, there is a responsibility that we have as ministers to encourage them and remind them that God has not forgotten us. He hasn’t forsaken us and He is faithful, even when the way isn’t clear. He is faithful.”

”There are groups as well that are down, and I’ve been there. I know what it is to be there and I’m thankful that God has blessed our faithfulness. Not that we are anything special! But I want to be more tuned in to what it is people are going through. I want people to know that we face it too. We go through the same kinds of things.”

Susan continues, “Jeff’s Dad had cancer this year. My Mom has had double knee replacement surgery. We face it. And I don’t want to forget that either. A lot of people forget ‘from whence they came’, and God forgive us for doing that. We’ve got to stay humble before the Lord.”

Like many women balancing a career and a family, Susan shares about the difficulty trying to be everywhere at once. “Women have the heart to nurture, even though we don’t always do it the best. I love being a mommy. I haven’t found the answer about how to balance everything.”

“I do radio promotion, I home school, travel all the time, keep the house up, wash clothes and go to church on Wednesdays when we are home. It’s hard. I do it one day at a time; one minute, one hour, one second, and I can’t think ahead. And that’s how I manage it. And I just pray for God to give strength, grace and wisdom, and to lead, guide and direct. The Bible says, “The steps of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord”. Sometimes I just dig in and hang on. Don’t know where I’ll end up, but I’m just going on with Him. Having done all, just stand.”

This very real, classy and strong lady of Southern Gospel has a lot to teach the ladies who look up to her. Susan Whisnant bears the mark of a woman of God who has been willing to submit to the Lord and has become a vessel for His love reaching out to others. A true woman of substance, Susan very deservedly takes her place among today’s generation of Southern Gospel legendary ladies.

Karen Peck and New River Score Another #1

Dahlonega, GA (November 22, 2013) Multi-award winning group Karen Peck and New River have once again come up with a #1 song. Titled 'Revival' this song resonates with audiences and radio listeners everywhere. This has resulted in their 4th number 1 song across the board on all the major Southern Gospel music charts that was either written or co-written by Karen. The song hit #1 for the month of January in the Singing News chart and has been in the top spot on AbsolutelyGospel.com charts for 4 straight weeks.

The song was co-written by Karen Peck Gooch, Kenna Turner West and Don Poythress at Daywind Publishing. It was recorded at Daywind Records by the group on their latest project with the same title as the single 'Revival'. Karen Peck and New River knew radio was playing this song, because something special was happening when they sang this song at concerts. Fans were singing along, hands were being raised and people were being blessed.

“We are so passionate about 'Revival'. We are praying that the Lord will break out revival all over this world. More than ever we need Him.” Karen went on to say “Thanks to our precious DJ's for believing in the song and for partnering with us in spreading the Good News of Jesus Christ.”

News from Karen Peck and New River

From KPNR newsletter of September 17, 201:
Hey precious friends!
After being on the road for nine days, it is good to be home!! I will be doing laundry for the next hundred years! Lol
Right now I'm sitting in my kitchen, in front of my lap top computer, writing this newsletter, and drinking a diet mountain dew. Now this is the life!

Last week was an incredible week in Louisville for NQC. As always, we saw friends from all over the world. With it being the last year in Louisville, everyone seemed very excited about being there. And all of the artists were on their game! The times that I was inside the arena, I was so blessed by the performances! The audience was amazing to sing to!

REVIVAL has soared up the charts to #12! We are very grateful to the DJ's for playing the song. It was wonderful seeing so many of you at the DJ appreciation breakfast at NQC. (Thanks to all of the listeners for calling your local radio station and requesting the song. It really does help!)

This week I will be traveling to Clemmons, N.C. for our annual Abraham Productions meeting. Please continue to pray as we prepare for API events. Y'all be sure and sign up with KPNR and go with us on the Abraham Cruise November 2-9!!!

Our new album REVIVAL is doing great! We praise the Lord!

We would love to see you so check our schedule and join us in concert!! You can order online at our website or go to your local Christian bookstore.

Love y'all:)
Karen

Susan -

Hey,
Joseph informed me that he needed to order his class ring. Wow I can't believe he is almost through with high school. It seems like yesterday that I was trying to teach him how to write a cursive E. That took awhile. :-) I am so thankful that God blessed David & I with a wonderful young man!!!
Blessings, Susan

Jeff-

NQC was such a blessing this year. It's almost like a family reunion for both artists and our friends of the music. We all were truly revived this year and we sang "Revival" for the first time at Convention. It has become my favorite song to sing right now. I pray you all are doing well. I hope to see you all on October 4 and 5 when we sing at Dollywood. Love you guys!!!!

SUSAN -
This has been a great summer. Vacation to the beach. Lots of cookouts. I enjoyed spending time with my family. Joseph always keeps me laughing. He is comical. With summer approaching the the end, I am looking forward to the fall and seeing you at our concerts.

JEFF -
This has been a GREAT summer! I can't believe it's already on the downward swing, but it has been a blessings. We have experienced anointed services and met some of the sweetest people on the planet. For me, on my off days, I have once again managed the local swimming pool near where I live. It has been fun in the sun! Although it seems like it has rained every day, we have had a blast! I also had a blessed time with my girlfriend who has now gone back to college for her last year of nursing school. We have made lasting memories and she's been able to come to some of our dates. I am really excited about the fall, as it is my favorite season, especially on the road. I look forward to seeing you all soon!!!! Blessings!

KAREN -
This has been one of my favorite summers! Vacationing in Destin, Fl. with family and friends was definitely a highlight. KPNR Homecoming was a success. Gatlinburg Gathering was a huge blessing. Wednesday night church at Free Chapel was amazing. Matthew was busy with traveling with us but had a couple of dates with Parachute Parade. He also has a girlfriend!

Kari got a new car!! Well, it's used, but new to her! She and I have been driving around in her little candy apple red Mini Cooper. She also had her first acting lesson in Nashville. Rickey has been working hard in the hair salon. He is now selling Aveda products.

I have been busy being a Mom and loving every minute of it! Also I did a Skype audition for a Christian movie! I'm waiting to hear back from the producers.

We decided a while back to take a couple of Sundays off during the summer so we could spend quality time with our families. It has been nice going to church together as a family. Last Sunday after church, we went boating with some precious friends. Had a ball!!
And last but not least... I had my first colonoscopy! That was quite an experience! Lol (I know I'm listing only the fun things from the summer but y'all know that I usually over share! I just HAD to tell y'all!! ;)

There are so many things that I've left out. We loved all of the places that we went and met some wonderful new friends. The rest of the year will be awesome! I'm looking forward to the annual fall dates and the Abraham Productions cruise in November!

Be sure to check our schedule and come see us!

Love y'all! :)

Happy New Year From Karen Peck and New River

From KPNR email newsletter of January 3, 2013:

Happy New Year!
I've been thinking about this for quite some time. How can we have the best year ever? Some people are starting off the new year grieving the loss of a loved one. Some are facing physical challenges. Some are without jobs. The list goes on.
However, I believe that if we spend more time with the Lord by praying and reading His Word, this time next year we will say that 2013 was the best year ever. Maybe our circumstances surrounding us may not be the best, but as long as we are walking closely with God, we will have a peace that the Bible says 'passes all understanding'.
PHILIPPIANS 4:6,7 "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Jesus Christ."
As long as we have Christ in our lives, that is all we need. He will supply our needs.
Susan sings the song, Sustaining Grace. My favorite line in the song says that 'I tried to make that mountain move, but instead He moved in me.' How many times do we try to remove those mountains in our lives and we find ourselves burned out, complacent, and bitter?
We become weary in well doing. However, if we can step back from the situation and allow God to move those mountains for us, our lives will be filled with peace and contentment. Easier said than done, right?? Well, with the Lord's help, we can do it.
PHILIPPIANS 4:13 "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me." Let's challenge each other to make the effort to spend more time with our Lord and watch Him do mighty works in our lives. Then, let's have the same conversation this time next year!! I believe we will truly say that we had the best year with the Lord that we've ever had!!!

Love Y'all!!!
Karen
Happy New Year!
Twenty-two years ago, New Year's Eve, we dedicated the KPNR group to The Lord. There have been times that we have had adversities and struggles, but also times of great joy and fulfillment. Psalm 31:7 -I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy for thou has considered my trouble, thou hast know my soul in adversities. God IS with us. My prayer is that everyone has a blessed 2013.

Love,
Susan
I am wishing all of you a very blessed 2013!
It is hard to believe that this weekend will be my 3 year anniversary with KPNR. Time has flown by! Honestly, it has been such a dream come true and I cannot thank you enough for your support and prayers. I cannot wait to see what God has in store for us all in 2013, and I want to encourage you to keep pressing on - no matter where you are or what you're doing, give The Lord your BEST!!!!

The Watkins Family gains new chart song and adds a new musician

The Watkins Family adds talents of a full-time musician to their ministry as their latest song climbs the charts-.

The group which includes matriarch Judy Watkins and two of her adult children Todd and Lorie. They continue a path sharing their love of Jesus through acoustic music touring across the United States and Canada since 1982.

Josh Blankenship, 26, of Floyd County, Va., who plays guitar and mandolin, recently joined the group.

Blankenship was previously part of the bluegrass gospel band – Statement with his sister Ashlee Blankenship.

“We often meet talented musicians but Josh is more than that, he also has the heart for ministry it takes to make a difference in the lives of others,” said Judy Watkins.

Blankenship who began playing just six years ago said his focus is to reach the lost and encourage people through the music.

“The reason I wanted to play with the Watkins Family is I could tell they really believe what they are singing about,” he said.

Lorie and Todd agree that his talents add wonderfully to what they share musically.

“Josh and his wife Brooke, who also lends her support to our work, are wonderful additions to our ministry,” Lorie said. “He ably adds to what we do musically and vocally and brings a wonderful songwriting talent to the mix of our material as well.”

The group’s latest project “Heaven's Worth Waiting For” including their new chart single “What a Wonderful Name.” Gerald Crabb penned the song.

“We are excited to have our third Singing News chart recording from this CD,” Lorie said. “It is a wonderful song that we have seen touch those that attend our concerts.”

Grammy winner Mark Fain, Grammy nominated Karen Peck Gooch, and Danny Jones, produced the CD.
