The Chuck Wagon Gang Announces the Departure of Dave Emery

Dave Emery, long-time bass singer and guitarist for The Chuck Wagon Gang will be leaving the group effective May 31st. Dave and his wife, Phyllis, plan to pursue their life-long dream of moving to Florida in the near future. "Although I will be leaving the Gang, don't be surprised if you see me singing again someday, as Gospel Music is in my blood", said Dave Emery of Seymour, TN. "To have been a member of The Chuck Wagon Gang has been a great honor, and to have sung their songs has been a real thrill. I have had a wonderful time and great experience with The Chuck Wagon Gang, and wish the group well as they continue a 75-year legacy, but I can't wait to move back to Florida!"

Replacing Dave will be 26-year-old Jeremy Stephens, who will also be performing double duties as guitarist and bass singer. Many of you have already met Jeremy, as he filled in for tenor singer Stan Hill, who was away from the group for some time during his wife's recent illness and surgeries, and also played guitar for the group during that time.

Jeremy was born in Lynchburg, VA and raised in Danville, VA. Having fallen in love with traditional bluegrass and old time music at an early age, he began playing fiddle and banjo at age 5, and sometime later picked up the guitar. He began playing with a bluegrass band at age 10. For years, banjo has been Jeremy’s primary instrument. He has played banjo with several bluegrass groups over the last 17 years. Jeremy graduated from Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA with a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, but has chosen to pursue music, his lifelong passion.

Jeremy first heard the Chuck Wagon Gang at age 12 when he started listening to his grandparents’ gospel records, and he has been in love with their music ever since. Being a bluegrasser at the core, his favorite version of the Gang is the original group: Rose, Anna, Dad, and Jim. One of his biggest hobbies is record collecting, and one of his main record collections is The Chuck Wagon Gang. Jeremy also loves the guitar playing of Howard Gordon, Anna’s husband who played for the Gang in the 50s and 60s.

Speaking from her home in Hertford, NC, Owner/Manager Shaye Smith stated: "Dave has done a great job for several years in handling many positions. He performed as guitarist, bass singer, and MC, while also overseeing many administrative duties. We will miss him, but wish him well in his future endeavors. There there is great excitement as we bring on board a very talented, young man, a dedicated CWG fan, and one who can play the style of my late Grandfather, Howard Gordon".

Jeremy says, “I am so excited to be working for my favorite gospel group. I have loved their music for years, and I’m so thankful to God for putting me here at this place in my life.” Jeremy currently lives in Nashville, TN.

Booking duties have been assumed by Harold Timmons, who can be reached at 817-944-2538.

Today, the Chuck Wagon Gang holds the distinction of being the oldest recording mixed gospel group still performing with ties to the original founding. The Chuck Wagon Gang records for Song Garden Music Group, and their latest single release, "Bare Hands" is being well received by radio listeners all across the country. Their latest recording, “My Soul Shall Live On” remains true to their famed tradition of old favorites, yet freshness comes out in several new songs. The Chuck Wagon Gang is committed to preserving the integrity of the it’s great legacy by continuing the simple style that Dad Carter established nearly 75 years ago. They will continue to do as Dad Carter instructed, “Sing the old songs, and sing them the way I taught you.”

Debut Project From The New Gospel Singing Caravan In Stores This Week

Hendersonville, TN (May 3, 2011) – The Blackwood Brothers, LeFevre Quartet and Chuck Wagon Gang have teamed up with Daywind Records to present a brand new recording entitled, Keeps On Rolling Along. This unique project, produced by David Staton and Mike LeFevre, provides a new generation of Gospel music lovers with a modern version of the Gospel Singing Caravan television show and tour of the 1960s. The album features classics such as “I’m Too Near Home” and “How Great Thou Art” in addition to several new songs, including the first radio single, “I Always Have A Song To Sing.” To promote the release of this collaborative project, the three groups will also be touring together for select dates this year.

“When we were putting this project together, we wanted the music and the arrangements to be very true to the original Gospel Singing Caravan of the 1960s. That is why we chose many songs from that era and specifically songs that were performed by the original Caravan,” shares David Staton and Mike LeFevre. “We also chose to put a couple of new songs on the CD that were penned from writers Dianne Wilkinson and Jerry Kelso. Both of them have an amazing ability to write music that is true to that era both musically and lyrically, so even the new songs flow well with the classic material.”
Keeps On Rolling Along is available at Christian retail stores across the country and digitally at iTunes and other outlets. Bulk purchasing for gift and ministry purposes is available by calling 1-800-635-9581.

Daywind Records is based in Hendersonville, TN and is distributed worldwide through New Day Christian Distributors. Daywind is home to such great artists as Brian Free & Assurance, Sisters and the Booth Brothers, among others.

Shaye Smith Returns to the Chuck Wagon Gang

PIGEON FORGE, TN (Press Release) - The Chuck Wagon Gang is pleased to announce that Shaye Smith, the grand-daughter of the late Anna Carter Gordon Davis, the original alto singer for the Chuck Wagon Gang, will be returning full time to sing alto once again with the group. Shaye first came to the Gang in 1993 as the soprano singer for the group, which was comprised of Roy Carter, Eddie Carter, and their sister, Ruth Ellen Carter Yates. Some ten years ago she became the alto singer for the group, and two years ago she left the group to be with her young boys and attend to some family matters.
“Truly, I’ve missed singing, the many fans and friends I’ve met along the way, and I have missed continuing the heritage and legacy that my family started over seventy-four years ago,” stated Shaye from her home in Hertford, NC. “I knew I would be back with the group, I just did not know when and how the circumstances would unveil for my return. I am just so happy to be returning!”
“Shaye’s return is a wonderful blessing to begin the New Year,” said Dave Emery, manager, emcee, and guitarist for the group. “I’ve looked forward to this time ever since she left, but I never thought it would be this soon. Favorable circumstances just recently developed to make this possible. With the Diamond 75th Anniversary of The Chuck Wagon Gang just a year away, the timing could not be any better for the co-owner of the group to return! We’re already working on a documentary for our 75th anniversary, and her input as a family member is essential.”
While Shaye has been away, the alto position has been held by two of the finest singers to ever work with The Chuck Wagon Gang. In recent times, Kelly Jennings, of Kingsport, TN has been the alto singer. Prior to Kelly, Penny Greene, from Morristown, TN sang for a little over two years. "Penny and Kelly have done a great job and have maintained a great rapport with the fans. We wish them well in their future endeavors,” stated Dave Emery.
Shaye’s first appearance back with the group will be on Thursday, January 14th in Murfreesboro, TN at Fair Havens Independent Baptist Church at 7:00 PM.
The Chuck Wagon Gang, now in their 74th year as an organized group, currently operates out of Pigeon Forge, TN, with a Nashville office operated by Harold Timmons. In addition to Shaye, the current members are Dave Emery, Julie Hudson, Stan Hill, and Joe Rotton. In 1936, the original Chuck Wagon Gang landed a major recording contract. They were associated with Columbia Records (now Sony Music) for 39 years, during which time the recorded over 400 songs, and sold nearly 40 million records for the label. Their 1948 recording of “I’ll Fly Away” became a certified million selling single. Currently recording for Song Garden Music group, the group’s current single, "Singing As I Go" from their release “Keep Travelin’ On” is currently being featured on radio throughout the country.
