UP Sponsors 'Evolution of Gospel' Celebration

Event at Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. Highlights September's 6th Annual Gospel Music Heritage Month

2014 Honorees Include Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin and Sen. Blanche Lincoln

ATLANTA, Sept. 8, 2014 /
Christian Newswire/ -- The Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation (@gmhmonth) is proud to announce that UP (@UPtv) will sponsor and help promote the annual "Evolution of Gospel" celebration at The John F. Kennedy Center for Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. The sixth annual event commemorates the month of September as Gospel Music Heritage Month (GMHM) and features scintillating performances and special tributes. This year's honorees include Gospel music legends Yolanda Adams and Kirk Franklin, and former Sen. Blanche Lincoln of Arkansas, who, along with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), was instrumental in the passage of the resolution that established Gospel Music Heritage Month.

This awards event will be held on September 15, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. ET and will be produced by Ernest Walker of Walker Entertainment Group, Houston, TX. Musical tributes will be rendered by some of the most anointed Gospel vocalists including Kathy Taylor, Edwin Hawkins, Dottie Peoples, Stephen Hurd and Tasha Page Lockhart, among others.

Charles Humbard, CEO of UP and who was instrumental in the creation of GMHM, said, "No other music uplifts like gospel music. It is a part of the fabric of America and our heritage at UP and we are pleased to be a part of this terrific celebration."

Congresswoman Lee says of the event, "Gospel music is an American art form that has spanned hundreds of years and across several generations and has touched millions of lives around the world while demonstrating its profound ability to transcend secular musical genres. Gospel music reaches all denominations and racial groups. From the Tennessee Valley, to the Appalachia, to New York to Houston, to Mississippi to Atlanta gospel music is sung by many different people all over the United States and the world. This month, we are commemorating those people that bring joy and comfort to soldiers on the battlefield and many others. We are all reminded by the song 'Amazing Grace' that was written by former boat captain John Newton. Gospel Music speaks to everyone and the Gospel Music legislation is important because it highlights all of those stories of gospel music and the early leaders in gospel music. The influence of it can be found infused in all forms of secular music including rock & roll, country, R&B, and countless other styles. I am thankful that we are continuing to commemorate and designate the month of September as Gospel Music Heritage Month which will celebrate and honor the heritage of gospel music. Gospel Music Heritage Month has been celebrated in the Halls of Congress as well as the Administration as well as other locations around the nation. We hope to see many more events like this across the nation in the month of September."

Carl Davis, chairman of the Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation said, "Our annual gala has become one of the most anticipated events on the Gospel music calendar, and it gets bigger and better every year. The live performances and tributes to the great history of this music genre make the event like no other. We will honor two gospel icons, Kirk Franklin and Yolanda Adams, and our friend Senator Blanche Lincoln, the co-sponsor of that historical resolution declaring September as 'Gospel Music Heritage Month.' The efficacy of these individuals has impacted the genre of gospel music with historical relevance and meaning. They have indelibly written on the consciousness of the human spirit the unyielding power of the gospel through song. I wish to thank the leadership of the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Thomas A. Dorsey Convention of Choirs and Choruses, Edwin Hawkins Music & Arts Seminar, and the Gospel Heritage Foundation for joining the Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation in this celebration. Together we can take gospel music to its rightful place in the history of this great nation."

In 2008, Congresswoman Jackson Lee introduced the historic resolution, H.J. Res. 90, after meeting in her U.S. Capital office with Charley Humbard, Gospel Music Advocate Carl Davis and Entertainment Executive Alvin Williams. The group met to discuss the rich contributions of Gospel music to this country and to provide the necessary support and leadership to have September designated as "Gospel Music Heritage Month" across the nation. With the support of Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-AR), the bipartisan passage of the bill helped to usher in a new national focus to honor Gospel music for its valuable and longstanding contributions to the culture of the United States. Congresswoman Jackson Lee then led the effort with Gospel Music Advocate Carl Davis to create the Gospel Music Heritage Month Foundation that celebrates Gospel music annually.

Previous honorees of the Evolution of Gospel event, include Gospel icons and trailblazers Dr. Bobby Jones (Bobby Jones Gospel); Cathy Hughes (Radio One); Charley Humbard (UP TV); Don Jackson (Stellar Awards); Congressman John Lewis, who was honored as a salute to the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington; and Gospel icon Richard Smallwood, along with Bill Hearn of Capital Music Group for their major contributions to the legacy of Gospel music.

"JOYFUL NOISE" SOUNDTRACK DEBUTS AT #1 ON BILLBOARD SOUNDTRACK CHART

Soundtrack Features New Music Performed by Dolly Parton, Queen Latifah, Kirk Franklin, Keke Palmer, Karen Peck and Others

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (January 18, 2012) –– WaterTower Music’s soundtrack to Alcon Entertainment’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ Joyful Noise debuts this week at #1 on Billboard’s Soundtrack Chart, #1 on the Billboard Gospel chart, #2 on Billboard’s Christian chart, #2 on the Billboard Independent Current Albums chart, and landed a Top 20 debut on Billboard’s Top Current Albums chart.

The soundtrack features performances by Grammy® Lifetime Achievement Award recipient and Oscar® nominee Dolly Parton; Oscar® nominee, Grammy® and Golden Globe Award winner Queen Latifah; BET and NAACP Award winner Keke Palmer; 11-time Singing News® female vocalist of the year, three-time Grammy® nominee and three-time Dove nominee Karen Peck; and seven-time Grammy®, 35-time Stellar, 12-time Dove, five-time NAACP, and two-time BET Music Award winner Kirk Franklin. Five-time Grammy®, six-time Dove, two-time Stellar Award winner Mervyn Warren produced and arranged the Joyful Noise soundtrack.

Parton, who penned three new songs for the collection, recently performed two of those songs on national TV: “From Here to the Moon and Back” on the Late Show with David Letterman, and “Not Enough,” a duet with co-star Queen Latifah, on NBC’s Today Show.

The third song Parton wrote, “He’s Everything,” is also on the soundtrack, which includes the film’s stars performing renditions of memorable songs originally recorded by a wide range of artists: Chris Brown, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Sly & the Family Stone, Usher, and Stevie Wonder.

The collection also includes tracks by some of the finest acts in gospel and R&B. Grammy winner Kirk Franklin wrote and takes the vocal reins on his jubilant new song “In Love,” and award-winning gospel vocalist Karen Peck creates harmonic gold on “Mighty High.”

Dolly Parton and Mervyn Warren will be featured on Sirius XM’s “The Bob Edwards Show” on Friday, January 20, 2012.

ABOUT THE FILM
Oscar® nominees Queen Latifah (“Chicago,” “Hairspray”) and Dolly Parton (“Steel Magnolias,” “Nine to Five”) star in Alcon Entertainment’s and Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Joyful Noise,” a funny and inspirational story of music, hope, love and renewal.

The small town of Pacashau, Georgia, has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition. The choir has always known how to sing in harmony, but the discord between its two leading ladies now threatens to tear them apart. Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old. Shaking things up even more is the arrival of G.G.’s rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). Randy has an ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose’s beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer), and the sparks between the two teenagers are causing even more friction between G.G. and Vi Rose. If these two strong-willed women can put aside their differences for the good of the people in their town, they—and their choir—may make the most joyful noise of all.

Starring with Latifah and Parton are Keke Palmer (“Akeelah and the Bee”), Courtney B. Vance (“Extraordinary Measures”), Jeremy Jordan (Broadway’s “Bonnie and Clyde”), and Kris Kristofferson (“Dolphin Tale”). Rounding out the main cast are Dexter Darden, Angela Grovey, Paul Woolfolk and Jesse L. Martin.

Alcon Entertainment presents a Farrell Paura Productions/O.N.C. Entertainment Production, “Joyful Noise,” being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. The film opened nationwide on January 13, 2012. www.joyfulnoisethemovie.com
