Award-winning Tenor DAVID PHELPS Tops Sales Charts

NASHVILLE, Tenn.–GRAMMY®-nominated, classically trained tenor David Phelps topped the sales charts this week with his all-new recording, Freedom (Gaither Music Group). Produced by Phelps and mentor/friend/gospel music legend Bill Gaither, the new release landed at #1 on the Southern Gospel Albums chart and at #10 on the CCM Albums chart, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition, Phelps’ previous release, Classic (Gaither Music Group), hit the #2 spot on the Southern Gospel Albums chart, while the Classic DVD topped the Christian Music Video chart and came in at #3 on the Billboard Top Music Video chart.
Phelps, who wrote or co-wrote nine songs on the new release, describes, “…This is a snapshot of where I am on my journey…it’s real life and faith — not the absence of trouble, just the ability to be led through it by our loving Savior. For me, these songs are like the rings of a tree telling its story: some years were plentiful; some were dry; in the end they speak of life.”
Those songs of life underscore Phelps’ ability to bring music to life and showcase his award-winning, three-octave range. The recording includes gospel standards such as “Ain’t No Grave,” “When the Saints Go Marching In” and a signature recording of “We Shall Behold Him”; yet one of the songs taking audiences by storm is the Phelps-penned “Ghost Town (Freedom).”
“The central theme of Freedom emanates from the title song, ‘Ghost Town (Freedom),’” explains Phelps. “I began writing the era-based lyric in the verses and was amazed how the metaphor of Christ painted itself…it’s about why He did what He did: freedom!’ So much of our spiritual lives (and the songs on this project) are spent searching for or trying to cling to freedom.”
The recording features Phelps’ anticipated powerhouse vocals along with musicianship from a who’s who of Nashville talents including Gordon Mote, Chris Rodriguez, Danny O’Lannerghty, Greg Ritchie, Sam Levine, David Davidson and Jack Jezzro among others. The orchestrations were penned by Phelps, Mote, Steve Mauldin and Kristin Wilkinson. The rest of the Gaither Vocal Band — Bill Gaither, Wes Hampton, Adam Crabb and Todd Suttles – were on hand to perform some of the project’s background vocals.
Freedom is distributed through Capitol Christian Distribution and is available throughout general market stores and the Christian marketplace in addition to online retailers including iTunes, Amazon and www.gaither.com.

Award-winning Tenor DAVID PHELPS Celebrates FREEDOM with All-NEW Recording

Acclaimed Vocalist Brings a “Ghost Town” to Life

Phelps Showcases His Vocal Prowess and Songwriting Talents with New Release

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--February 23rd, 2015--GRAMMY®-nominated, classically trained tenor David Phelps showcases his award-winning voice and three-octave range on his all-new recording, Freedom (Gaither Music Group). Produced by Phelps and mentor/friend/gospel music legend Bill Gaither, the new release, scheduled to hit the streets on April 14th, underscores Phelps’ ability to bring music to life.

“Freedom is a bit of a return home for me,” he describes. “I love that the first song starts with the lyric, ‘I'm back again....’ As the song ‘I'm Coming Home’ unfolded I knew that it had to be the first song on the project. I began my recording career with a project that included songs like ‘End of the Beginning,’ ‘Let the Glory Come Down’ and ‘No More Night’ – a gospel release with an eclectic mix of modern pop and soulful ballads. I will always be an eclectic artist, and…I've been honored to record rock ballads, traditional pop songs, classical arias and gospel standards.”

Fans will enjoy more of those gospel standards on the new recording, which includes Phelps’ haunting rendition of the classic hit “Ain’t No Grave,” an acoustic-driven version of “When the Saints Go Marching In” and a signature recording of “We Shall Behold Him.”

In addition to gospel favorites, Phelps contributed nine new songs that he wrote or co-wrote to the release. He addressed topics such as humility, brokenness, awe, faith, doubt, hope and freedom as featured in the title cut that required some soul-searching.

“The central theme of Freedom emanates from the title song, ‘Ghost Town (Freedom),’” explains Phelps. “I began writing the era-based lyric in the verses and was amazed how the metaphor of Christ painted itself. However, I got to the chorus and was stuck. After playing it for Bill (Gaither), he agreed that it needed something different than what I had. I went back to the drawing board.

“I asked myself, ‘What is all this about? It's not really about a ‘Ghost Town’ or a metaphor or even the specific deeds of Jesus. It's about why He did what He did: freedom!’ So much of our spiritual lives (and the songs on this project) are spent searching for or trying to cling to freedom.”

The rest of the Gaither Vocal Band -- Bill Gaither, Wes Hampton, Adam Crabb and Todd Suttles – were on hand to perform some of the project’s background vocals.

“I truly feel like these songs are a part of me,” Phelps explains. “They are snapshots of where I am on my journey, and my hope is that they are told in a way that others can relate to and be encouraged by. I am far from perfect and depend on grace every moment of every day. I hope that Freedom paints a real portrait of living faith as I learn and grow on my journey.”

Freedom will be distributed through Capitol Christian Distribution and will be available throughout general market stores and the Christian marketplace in addition to online retailers including iTunes, Amazon and www.gaither.com.

The release will be positioned heavily at retail, via catalog placements and through a direct TV campaign, beginning in April, on networks including DISH TV, DIRECTV, AT&T Uverse, PBS, GaitherTV, TBN, FamilyNet, CTN, GMTN, Guardian, Liberty, RFD, TCT and TLN. The campaign will also air in Canada on Vision TV, The Miracle Channel, Grace TV and CTS.

Fans and Radio “HAPPY” to Hear “What a Happy Time”

Newly Formed Trio Launches Website

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—January 29th, 2014—Songs in the Key of Happy (Gaither Music Group), the debut CD release from newly formed trio Goodman Revival, landed at #1 on this week’s Southern Gospel chart according to Nielsen Soundscan. In addition, the Songs in the Key of Happy DVD topped the Christian Music Video chart. The audio release also landed at #11 on the Contemporary Christian Music chart, and the DVD came in at #4 on the Billboard Music Video chart.
“I’m extremely excited about the way Goodman Revival is bringing these old favorites back to life,” stated Barry Jennings, president of Gaither Music Group. “We are especially thrilled with the response we are getting from our television audiences who have been moved by the way Tanya, Michael and Johnny communicate these old classics in a fresh and powerful way. These songs hold a great deal of significance for people all over the world; and Goodman Revival has a gift for connecting with those listeners, as well as attracting a new generation of gospel music enthusiasts.”
In addition to this week’s recording launch, the group’s debut single, “What a Happy Time,” landed in the Top 80 chart of national monthly radio airplay after only two weeks of nationwide airplay. The song is in the Top 5 New Releases at 14 stations and is the #3 Pick Hit at six stations.
“I have believed in this song from the moment I heard Goodman Revival’s new rendition of it,” stated radio promoter Les Butler, of Family Music Group. “…and I am not alone in my enthusiasm! Programmers across the country have been excited to have music from this trio, and I am thrilled with the early numbers we are seeing surrounding this single. I’ve heard the smiles in their voices as they talked about how happy they were to add Goodman Revival to their playlists.”
Songs in the Key of Happy finds Goodman Revival, of Smyrna, TN, paying homage to the music they grew up singing and hearing. The trio consists of Tanya Goodman Sykes, Michael Sykes and Johnny Minick, each of whom are seasoned Christian music veterans and past members of the legendary Happy Goodman Family singing group. This recording debut finds these familiar faces capturing the musical styles and heritage that have endeared them to countless people around the world for several decades.
Produced by Sykes and Minick, the new release features gospel classics such as “I Wouldn’t Take Nothing for My Journey,” “This Is Just What Heaven Means to Me,” “Look for Me,” “I Hold a Clear Title to a Mansion,” “Eyes of Jesus,” “Until You’ve Known the Love,” “Who Am I” and other fan favorites as well as an all-new song, “Settle the Score,” penned by Minick featuring that “Goodman three-quarter time.”“Johnny has the entire discography,” explains Goodman Sykes. “We sat down together and kept refining the list of songs. Each of us had our favorites, and we finally whittled the list down to 13 songs.”“As a producer, I think I brought more of the ‘current feel’ stylistically to the recording,” recalls Sykes. “Johnny keeps the old school style real, and he’s a big part of the DNA of who we are.”Minick agrees, “There is a strong balance here. Michael makes you want to do things. I think I sang things I might not have wanted to sing, and it worked. Michael brings energy to what we do. We have a lot of fun.”
The energy and passion the members of Goodman Revival bring to these timeless songs are readily evident on the DVD that was filmed before an enthusiastic audience at Gaither Studios in Alexandria, Indiana. In addition to the LIVE performance, the trio sat down with the video’s host and their longtime friend Bill Gaither for a behind-the-scenes look at the new recording and the Goodman Family legacy.
The trio was joined by a few special friends for the video’s performances. “The Gaither Vocal Band did a couple songs, and our great friend and super cheerleader Russ Taff joined us on ‘The Sweetest Song I Know.’ He rocked it down to the ground,” says Goodman Sykes. “It was awesome. He is a dynamo. That was a lot of fun.”
The new releases are currently airing as part of a tv campaign on DISH TV, DIRECTV, AT&T Uverse, GaitherTV, TBN, FamilyNet, CTN, GMTN, Guardian, Liberty, RFD, TCT and TLN. The campaign is airing in Canada on Vision TV, The Miracle Channel, Grace TV and CTS. The Award-winning Martins Deliver First A Cappella Recording in More Than a Decade

NASHVILLE, Tenn.—GRAMMY®-nominated and multi-DOVE Award-winning family trio The Martins have just completed an all-new release—their first a cappella recording in over 15 years—entitled A Cappella (Gaither Music Group). Known far and wide for their impeccable, tight family blend, siblings Joyce, Jonathan and Judy have put together a collection they describe as “the hardest thing they have ever recorded.”
“A cappella music is the purest form of vocal music to us,” adds Jonathan. “It keeps you on your toes and makes you sing better. To perform it live you have to be on your ‘A game.’ To attempt it is humbling; to accomplish it is exciting and rewarding.”
“We’ve been singing a cappella music professionally for 20 years,” describes Joyce. “It’s something we are known for, so we honestly felt like, ‘Hey, we’ve got this. It’s what we do, and we are putting together a great team of producers and arrangers. We just gotta do what they tell us to do.’ However, it was the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life! It made me realize I’ve got so much to learn and areas in which to grow. We found it very daunting at times…but now that it is finished I’m so proud of it!”
Part of the musical growth and complex arrangements stemmed from working with acclaimed performers, arrangers and producers Michael English, Lari Goss, David Phelps and Matthew Holt.
English, who produced all but one song on the new release, has been a longtime friend and advocate of The Martins. “One of my favorite things about Michael is that he is a great teacher,” explains Judy. “He doesn’t just tell you how to sing a part of a song; he helps you sing better in general. He forces you to be better through the process.”
“This was the first time Michael had ever produced an a cappella record,” adds Joyce. “He was a little nervous, and he was growing at the same time we were growing. He has been a part of our career for so many years. We would not be The Martins we are today if it weren’t for Michael.”
The Martins began giving credit to Lari Goss over 15 years ago when he produced and arranged their landmark recording An A Cappella Hymns Collection. He was back around the table with the trio to arrange several songs on this all-new release including a cover of “The Prayer.”
“This song has always been done as a duet,” describes Jonathan. “We weren’t sure if we could make the arrangement into one to fit a trio. We knew that if anybody could Lari Goss could do it. He said, ‘I don’t know if we can do that as a trio,’ so we moved on to other songs. Then during a break he started playing ‘The Prayer’ on piano. All of our ears perked up. He said, ‘Give me just a minute. Let’s try this.’ It began to work and come together. It is one of my favorite accomplishments of the project.”
Other accomplishments vary from hymns the trio has known since their childhoods (“Fairest Lord Jesus,” “Praise to the Lord”) and old “spirituals” (“When I Go Away”) to mainstream pop crossover songs (“You’ll Never Walk Alone,” “The Prayer”) and even a little “Reggae style” mixed into an arrangement (“Three Little Birds”). It showcases the group’s heralded ability to transcend musical styles, appease their fan base and weave in some of their personal favorites.
“It was Michael’s idea to bring David and Matthew into the studio,” Joyce recalls. “We were looking for something stylistically different. When there’s not any music to accompany you, you want something there to make the songs sound different. It’s easier to do that with musicians, but in this case we wanted to do a different thing with arrangements; so we brought them in, and as they say the rest is history.”
“We still love our previous a cappella music like ‘The Doxology’ and ‘Riverside Medley,’” Judy assures. “We’re always going to do those. We wanted to add some new songs to our repertoire, and we hope that our audiences will embrace these new songs as well.”
“This new music is something that has challenged us beyond our expectations,” says Joyce. “We had to work harder than ever and strive for the excellence that we believe God expects from us. We were raised with that work ethic, and we believe that God expects us to never stop striving or stop growing and to be the best we can be. We want to honor Him every time we go into the studio or onto the stage.”
In addition to their own concert appearances, the trio is currently hitting stages alongside singer/songwriter/comedian Mark Lowry on the Music and Madness Tour. Additionally, they are featured on select Gaither HOMECOMING Tour dates. Their national and international exposure continues to grow as A Cappella will receive prime placement in retail outlets and will air as part of a special TV offer on Dish TV, DirecTV, AT&T Uverse, GaitherTV, TBN, RFD, FamilyNet, CTN, GMC, GMTN, Guardian, Liberty, TCT and TLN. It will also air in Canada on Vision TV, CTS, The Miracle Channel and Hope TV.

Apparently, the new style is working as the release has already been described by one reviewer as the group’s best album to date--a big statement given the siblings’ history of hit songs and glowing reviews.

“If There Ever Was a Time,” the first single from the new release, is currently playing at radio stations nationwide. The song, a pick hit at several southern Gospel charting stations, just hit the Top 10 New Release chart for February according to reporting stations for The Singing News Magazine.
