Actor/entertainer Randall Franks finds Encouragement in the focus of latest book
![]() |
| Randall Franks signs his new book "Encouragers I : Finding the Light" for avid reader Kathy Liner at a book signing at the Ringgold Depot in Ringgold, Ga. |
Author/actor Randall Franks said he seeks to inspire others to find the encourager within through his latest book series – Encouragers.
The first of the series “Encouragers I : Finding the Light” released this month worldwide from Peach Picked Publishing shares 49 stories of actors, musicians and everyday folks who played a role in his early life.
“God blessed me with so many opportunities allowing me to perform for millions around the world, appear for the Grand Ole Opry and star on two American television networks,” Franks said. “Those doors were opened to me because people from all walks of life took the time to encourage me from young age. Even when there was no indication of what my talents would be and where they could lead, encouragers were already sharing their light with me.”
The first volume of the series highlights performers such as WSB Barndance stars Cotton and Jane Carrier and Grand Ole Opry star Bashful Brother Oswald; American icon Bob Hope and “Gunsmoke” legend Ken Curtis; country music masters Bill Monroe and Johnny Cash; bluegrass hall of famers Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs and “The Andy Griffith Show” star Doug Dillard; and heralded gospel music performers the Marksmen Quartet, the Lewis Family and Jeff & Sheri Easter.
Franks said individuals sharing their light is what he hopes will come as people read his book which features narratives about and interviews with those who helped shape his life and career.
“Early in life our families help to shape who we are but soon others reach out to make a difference that sometimes can simply be in passing or can be more substantial over time, but no matter how in depth, the smallest encouragement can change the direction of someone’s life when it is needed the most,” he said.
Franks, who is best known as “Officer Randy Goode” from the TV series “In the Heat of the Night,” starred in three series and 14 films. He became a country music personality as a youth beginning appearances at major country, folk, bluegrass and gospel events such as Country Music Association Fan Fair, National Folk Festival, National Quartet Convention, National Black Arts Festival and for the Grand Ole Opry. With 19 career albums in four genres, he has performed to over 145 million fans around the world. Musically, he is recognized as an International Bluegrass Music Museum Legend and Independent Country Music Hall of Fame member. He is a syndicated columnist featured in newspapers across the Southeast and Midwestern U.S.

Award-Winning Duo THE ROYS Gear Up For September Release Of Fourth Studio Album, THE VIEW
Nashville, TN (July 1, 2014) -- Award-winning brother/sister Bluegrass duo, THE ROYS, continue their creative momentum as they gear up for the September release of their fourth studio album, THE VIEW. The highly-anticipated project offers the truest representation of THE ROYS' unique sound to date, and builds upon the duo's success as songwriters, introducing 11 of their new compositions. The brand new album is fueled by the loving, upbeat first single, "No More Lonely," released to radio on June 10 and commercially to fans on June 24 via digital vendors including: iTunes, Amazon, Google Plus, Rhapsody and eMusic. THE VIEW, a Rural Rhythm Records' release, gives listeners THE ROYS' most organic project yet, and features a fan-appealing mix of traditional Bluegrass, Country and Gospel.
The duo's previous RRR release, GYPSY RUNAWAY TRAIN (2013), helped to secure Lee and Elaine's place on the global Bluegrass stage. In addition to earning the #1 spot on Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction's Most Played Album Chart for the month of October 2013, the album jumped back up to the chart's #2 spot last month. The reigning three-time Inspirational Country Music (ICM)Bluegrass Artist of the Year award winners proved their radio-friendly consistency with GYPSY, and look to further expand their appeal with THE VIEW.
In collaboration with some of today's hottest songwriters, including Steve Dean, Larry Alderman, Jenee Fleenor and Keesy Timmer, as well as Country star Josh Thompson, THE ROYS are once again poised to take their listeners on an amazing musical journey. Exploring a vast array of human emotions, THE VIEW resonates with diversity as it traverses the highs and lows of life. From the inspirationally-celebratory "
The siblings teamed up with Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry icon "Whisperin' Bill" Anderson to compose the disc's title track. The song eulogizes Lee and Elaine's grandparents' final resting place at Saint Mary's in New Brunswick, Canada. The lyrics and melody paint images of the small church overlooking the river so masterfully that one might ask if it is the view God sees while looking out his own window.
"Elaine and I poured our souls into this project," Lee admits as he climbs aboard the bus for another whirlwind festival season. "We focused hard on writing what was in our hearts, used our band throughout, and recorded and produced it in our studio. It's a bit unnerving to throw so much of ourselves out there, but we wanted this album to tell THE ROYS' story," he explains.
For Elaine, this project was a natural evolution. "For years, our fans have been telling us they really love the songs we write," she notes. "We really wanted to explore that. Creatively involving the band in recording the album has helped us gel as performers and broadened a foundation we can continue to build upon. This album, more than anything we've done so far, has our signature on it - from beginning to end. We are very proud and excited for our fans to hear it," Elaine adds enthusiastically.
Track listing:
1. "No More Lonely"
2. "Those Boots"
3. "Heaven Needed Her More"
4. "Sometimes"
5. "Live The Life You Love"
6. "The View"
7. "No More Tears Left To Cry"
8. "Northern Skies"
9. "Black Gold"
10. "Mended Wings"
11. "Mandolin Man"

Doyle Lawson Celebrates 34th Anniversary of His Band with Fan Appreciation Lunch
BRISTOL, TN (March 29, 2013) -- Doyle Lawson is celebrating his band’s 34th Anniversary next week by partnering with a gorgeous restaurant in Bristol called "KP” to bring four Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver fans a celebration lunch with Doyle next Thursday, April 4, in historic downtown Bristol.
Two fans will be chosen from entrants on Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver’s new Official Fan Facebook Page, and the two winners may each bring a guest and be treated to lunch with Doyle at the newly christened KP, formerly K.P. Duty, at 520 State Street, beside the Paramount Theater in Bristol.
“We’re excited to partner with Doyle Lawson for such a fun promotion celebrating 34 years of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver,” said Lisa Martin, owner of KP. “We look forward to having Doyle and four of his wonderful fans with us next week!”
KP offer a delectable menu of entrees ranging from scrumptious Southern Crab Cakes to tender Pork Tenderloin to Pecan-crusted Trout, plus fresh crisp salads, hearty signature soups, sandwiches, burgers, quiche, and appetizers.
Everyone is welcome to enter the contest by visiting Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver’s new Official Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/DoyleLawsonOfficial. To enter, fans should “Like” the page AND comment on the highlighted photo of Doyle with a headline reading, “Win Lunch for Two with Doyle Lawson!” Two winners will be chosen by drawing from entrants next Tuesday, April 2, and announced on the band’s Facebook Page on Tuesday afternoon.
Doyle officially formed his band during the first week in April 1979, and the group performed their first shows in early May, playing their first show at Buddy’s Barbeque in Knoxville on a Thursday night. They came back to the Down Home in Johnson City for a show on Friday evening, played Saturday afternoon at a Bluegrass Festival in Pickens, South Carolina, then came back to the Down Home in Johnson City for a show Saturday night, packing four performances into their very first weekend. Quicksilver’s first band consisted of Terry Baucum on banjo, Jimmy Haley on guitar, Lou Reid on bass, and Doyle on mandolin.
The current line-up of Quicksilver includes Jason Barie on fiddle, Joe Dean on banjo, Corey Hensley on bass, Mike Rogers on guitar, Josh Swift on dobro, and Doyle on mandolin. Doyle was named SPBGMA’s Mandolin Player of the Year on Sunday, February 3, the same day he celebrated his 50th Anniversary in music. Lots of reasons for Lawson to celebrate this year, with Mountain Home Music hosting an album release party last week for the reigning ICM Vocal Group of the Year Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, heralding the band’s newest album “Roads Well Traveled” at Nashville’s Sirius XM Music City Theater inside Bridgestone Arena.
Guests at the private event ranged from Media to Music Industry to four special fan guests Lawson personally welcomed to the event.
“The fans are so important to us,” said Lawson, “and we want to take this special year for us and make sure our fans and friends know how much we appreciate them.”
The current fan appreciation promotion with a prize of lunch with Doyle begins on Friday, March 29, and ends on Tuesday, April 2, with lunch for the winners being held at KP on Thursday, April 4, 2013. Winners must be able to be in Bristol via their own transportation on Thursday, April 4, to be eligible to win and attend the lunch.
“I’m looking forward to lunch with our fans at KP, and hope everyone will join in the fun and enter our contest, and help us celebrate our anniversary!” said Lawson.

August 17, 2012
The Board of Directors of the International Bluegrass Music Association is pleased to announce that it has appointed Nancy Cardwell as the organization’s Executive Director.

Melody Walker Releases 'Gold Rush Goddess' & Announces National Tour
BAY AREA TALENT MELODY WALKER RELEASES ‘GOLD RUSH GODDESS,’
ANNOUNCES COAST-TO-COAST TOUR WITH JACOB GROOPMAN
Aug. 28 release follows RockyGrass festival band competition win
AUSTIN, Texas — Melody Walker’s debut album, GOLD RUSH GODDESS, will be released nationally Aug. 28, but she and partner Jacob Groopman already have reason to celebrate: With their band Front Country, they won the band competition at RockyGrass, the July festival founded 40 years ago by bluegrass icon Bill Monroe.
Walker and Groopman are now spreading the sound they like to call “Americali” on a nationwide tour that includes stops at Aug. 22’s Jerry Garcia Tribute Concert in Berkeley and in Nashville for September’s Americana Music Festival & Conference. (See below for a list of tour dates, or check melodywalkermusic.com.)
Walker, a Bay Area native, and Groopman, raised in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, describe “Americali” as Americana with a California twist, but just as Americana melds many influences, their music draws from diverse genres including bluegrass, rock, jazz, classical, Afrobeat, samba and even Balkan folk. They never stray too far from their American folk roots, however, preferring to create literate music that honors tradition, yet sounds completely of the moment.
Led by the title track and “Family Band,” GOLD RUSH GODDESS is already drawing high praise. The Turnstyled Junkpiled blog calls it “easily one of the strongest Americana releases of 2012.” No Depression claims, “Melody Walker has created an album of exceptional tunes.” And influential Bay Area radio station KPFA-FM raves, “She kicked it out of the ballpark on this album!”
Walker and Groopman co-produced the album, recorded in a historic former general store on a remote cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. But now, they’re ready to spread Americali from sea to shining sea. And this is one gold rush you’re gonna want to get in on right now.

New Music From the Harper Family
What is so great about family bands? They always seem to have a natural chemistry and the ability to fit together just right.
Bluegrass has a tradition of great family groups, from the Carter Family to Cherryholmes. In this tradition, where great music is the norm, The Harper Family rises to the top.
They exemplify what is so magical about a fine family Bluegrass outfit; seamless playing and singing and an effortless blend that make complex music seem easy.
But this group from Missouri has something extra. They can do all of the above better than most in the business. This first major release, Changes, is a stunning recording with a perfect mix of all Gospel songs that spotlight the incredible talent of this group.
Changes grabs your attention immediately with the opening mandolin/guitar duel on “Salt and Light.” From an epic rendering of “King’s Ransom” to a creative remake of the classic “I’ll Live Again,” this project will make Southern Gospel fans love their sound and bluegrass fans love their message.
We think you will agree—the Harper Family is the future of Gospel Bluegrass!
Changes will be available August, 21 at Crossroads, iTunes, and Amazon. You can preview samples here.

STEVE MARTIN & THE STEEP CANYON RANGERS NAMED IBMA ENTERTAINERS OF THE YEAR

(from left to right: Nicky Sanders, Charles Humphrey III, Woody Platt, Steve Martin, Mike Guggino and Graham Sharp. Photo by Alane Anno)
On the strength of a busy touring schedule, a string of national television appearances and the release of a new album, Rare Bird Alert on Rounder Records, Steve Martin & The Steep Canyon Rangers took home the Entertainer of the Year award at the 22nd annual International Bluegrass Music Awards Thursday night, September 29 at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Martin, who always included banjo picking in his early stand-up comedy routines, has become more serious about recording and performing bluegrass music during the past two years, with the release of two albums of original music.
Martin appeared at the microphone to receive the bluegrass music industry’s highest music award, leapt a few times into the air, congratulated the other Entertainer of the Year nominees and jokingly thanked them for losing. He went on to thank producers John McEuen and Tony Trischka as well as his band mates, and then he talked about how hard they’ve been working on their music, as well as the humor and entertainment aspects of their show, while never denigrating the music. Martin said that while half of their audience usually comes to see him not knowing anything about bluegrass, “they all leave loving it, and maybe they seek out other musicians. We’re really, really honored to win this award tonight.”
Steep Canyon Rangers lead singer, Woody Platt quipped, “Working with Steve, we might be the most entertained of all. Most of all we thank Steve for giving us this most amazing ride.”
Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers, a young group based in North Carolina named IBMA’s Emerging Artist of the Year in 2007, played “Me and Paul Revere” during the Awards Show—a song Martin wrote from the perspective of Revere’s horse and performed on national television at the Capitol 4th Concert in Washington, D.C. July 4. There’s always been something a little magic about fiddle and banjo music, and Martin’s deft clawhammer style underscored by Nicky Sanders’ exuberant fiddling and soaring three-part vocal harmony from the Rangers definitely did the trick.
It was an exciting night for New York State-based band, The Gibson Brothers, who took home awards for Vocal Group of the Year and Album of the Year for Help My Brother, on Compass Records.
The Boxcars, a new combination of veteran musicians, were named Emerging Artists of the Year and Instrumental Group of the Year. Band member Ron Stewart tied for Banjo Player of the Year with The Grascals’ Kristin Scott Benson, who received the award for the fourth consecutive year.
Balsam Range received top honors for Song of the Year for “Trains I Missed,” written by Walt Wilkins, Gilles Godard & Nicole Witt. “There are a lot of folks out there—myself included—who are thankful for some of those trains missed and how things turned out,” commented Tim Surrett of Balsam Range.
Legendary artists Doyle Lawson, J.D. Crowe and Paul Williams took home two trophies for Recorded Event of the Year and Gospel Recorded Performance, for “Prayer Bells from Heaven.” The three announced their plans to record a second Old Friends album, much to the delight of fans in attendance at the Awards Show.
Russell Moore of IIIrd Tyme Out and Dale Ann Bradley took home awards for Male Vocalist and Female Vocalist of the Year—the fourth time for each. Rob Ickes of Blue Highway was awarded his 13th Dobro Player of the Year award, the most trophies any individual instrumentalist has received in the history of the IBMA Awards.
Michael Cleveland was named Fiddle Player of the Year for the ninth time, and his band received the award for Instrumental Recorded Performance of the Year for “Goin’ Up Dray Branch,” a song written by Buddy Spicher and Jimmy Martin. Marshall Wilborn was named Bass Player of the Year for the third time, Bryan Sutton received the Guitar Player of the Year award for the sixth time, and Adam Steffey dedicated his eighth Mandolin Player of the Year to his twin sons, who he expects to be born in the next two weeks.
Hosted by legendary mandolin player and band leader Sam Bush, the 2011 IBMA Awards Show were a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the birth of Bill Monroe, recognized as the Father of Bluegrass.
Sam Bush told a story about how a young musician once approached Bill Monroe and played a tune he’d written squarely in the Monroe style. The older mandolinist listened carefully and said, “That’s real good. What can you do on your own now?” The question was answered at the IBMA Awards, as band after talented band hit the stage.
As bluegrass music heads into the second hundred years after its founder’s birth, the genre is stronger than ever—as evidenced by a number of virtuoso level, high energy live performances from The Sam Bush Band, The Grascals, Balsam Range, The Del McCoury Band, Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out, Sierra Hull & Highway 111, Lonesome River Band, The Boxcars, The Gibson Brothers, Dailey & Vincent, Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver—later joined by J.D. Crowe and Paul Williams, George Shuffler, Hall of Famer Tom Gray and new Distinguished Award recipient Roland White.
The moment that probably would have made Bill Monroe smile was when White kicked into “Wheel Hoss,” with the next break played in twin harmony by Sam Bush and Ronnie McCoury on their mandolins. Dailey & Vincent thrilled the crowd with triple fiddles added to their usual line-up for “Close By,” and The Grascals brought two young girls from St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital who are battling cancer onstage with them to sing “I Am Strong,” a song inspired by the band’s trip to St. Jude.
Ronnie and Rob McCoury inducted their father into the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame, and guitarist James Alan Shelton inducted George Shuffler, the bass and cross-picked guitar stylist known as “the third Stanley Brother.” The evening ended with a guitar rendition of “Life is Like a Mountain Railway” from Shuffler and Shelton, backed by Gray, and a medley of Del McCoury songs delivered in his trademark, scalding tenor range.
The International Bluegrass Music Awards are voted on by the professional membership of the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), which serves as the trade association for the bluegrass music industry. The IBMA Awards Show is the centerpiece of the World of Bluegrass Week September 26 – October 2 in Nashville, Tenn., which also includes the IBMA Business Conference and Bluegrass Fan Fest.
The IBMA Awards Show was broadcast live on Sirius XM Satellite Radio (Bluegrass Junction, Channel 61) and on WSM-AM; the show will be syndicated to more than 300 U.S. markets and 14 foreign networks thanks to the sponsorship of Martha White, Deering Banjos, the International Bluegrass Music Museum, Bluegrass, Moonshine & The Birth of NASCAR – The Movie, Compass Records and the Academy of Bluegrass.
