Southern Sound's Alan Brewster Inducted

August 11 2014 (Ft. Oglethorpe, GA) Phenomenal Bass singer Alan Brewster of Southern Sound Quartet received the high honor of being inducted as an individual into the Tri-State Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Ft. Oglethorpe, GA. This Georgia native is known for his motivation in business, and his low voice that every great quartet needs.

Southern Sound Lead singer and Manager, Ben Harris said, “Although Alan remained a board member of the group during his three year absence, he was of course not a regular touring member during those years. We have had many promoters, pastors and friends ask about Alan, and now he is back and we could not be more pleased. Alan brings far more than his rich and talented voice. He also brings a wealth of business background, a firm commitment to Christ, and a friendly demeanor that everyone loves.”

Tri-State Gospel Music Hall of Fame was founded in 2005. It was formed to recognize and remember the efforts of those individuals whom have given to the advancement and support of Gospel Music in the Southeast Tennessee, Northwest Georgia, and Northeast Alabama, locally known as the Tri-state area.

There were 25 new inductees this year, including nationally known Jack Clark and Elmer Cole.
This years ceremony was held at Parkway Baptist Temple, Fort Oglethorpe, GA on August the 2nd.
Alan stated “I started singing bass in a young people’s church quartet at the age of 15. Since then I have sung with the Royal Heirs Quartet of Lafayette, GA, Kings Messengers Quartet of Lafayette, GA, Happy Harmony Quartet of Chattanooga, TN, Called Out Quartet of Dalton, GA, Hymnsmen Quartet of Cleveland, TN and Southern Sound Quartet of Nashville, TN. I joined Southern Sound in April of 2007 and stayed til October of 2010. After much thought and prayer I rejoined the group in August 2013.

My favorite memory would have to be my first performance on the main-stage of the National Quartet Convention with Southern Sound.”
To book Southern Sound call Ben Harris at (615) 481-9431 or Alan Brewster (423) 580-4915 .

About Southern Sound
A brief overview is simply a thumbnail sketch of what Southern Sound is really all about. In a word, Southern Sound Quartet is classy. They are deeply rooted in traditional Southern Gospel, four-part close harmony and in the testimony that Christ is Lord. I was fortunate to hear the group recently at a large church near my home, and they were indeed breathtaking. I lost count of the standing ovations they received that evening from a packed church, quite accustomed to hearing the finest Southern Gospel has to offer. The concert I attended will stay with me for quite some time, but even now, I hunger for more. Southern Sound’s attitude, infectious enthusiasm, stage presence, and fine sense of Spirit-filled music, makes a concert by Southern Sound one to be cherished for a very long while.

Atlanta Ride of Life Event Raises Awareness to Fight ALS

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga., July 24, 2014 /Christian Newswire/ -- For almost 2 months Silas "Randy" Smith has been riding his Motorcycle around the USA and talking about his wife,
Sophia Smith and the losing battle she fought with ALS. Randy rides with a two fold purpose: (1) To raise awareness about this devastating disease and (2) To complete an inpatient center for Hospice of South Texas, a state of the art facility for those who require intensive palliative care. Randy plans to accomplish this by personally asking each person he meets on his nationwide tour to give at least $10 for Hospice's new "home like" end-of-life center and to ask 10 others to do the same.

Randy will be in Stockbridge, Georgia on Saturday July 26th at the licensed Avon Beauty Center (retail store) located at 5015 Mt Zion Pkwy (next to Kohl's). Sophia was one of the top 10 producing Avon representatives in the USA, and was well known around the country; and her friend and sister representative Pat Puzder and her Team will host Randy for a special Atlanta "Ride of Life Event" this Saturday. Pat expects many representatives to join them from across Georgia and Alabama and perhaps even other areas because when Sophia died, she left not only her husband Randy and 3 children behind, she left an army of Avon representatives in awe of her bravery and courage.

The public is cordially invited! Music, clown and balloons, face painting, BBQ , shaved ice and Funnel cakes , mini makeovers by an Avon Make Up Maven, sidewalk vendors and a silent auction are among the planned activities.

Motorcycle Ride: Register at 4 PM at Avon Store. Kickstands up at 4;45. Ride to Monticello, Ga and back to Stockbridge. $10 per bike and $5 for extra rider.

In South Metro Atlanta, tune in to FUN101.1 FM radio, the #1 rated radio station in a 5 county area: Spalding, Pike, Lamar, Upson, and Meriwether. All can listen online at:www.fun101.1fm.com this Friday morning July 25th to hear the weekend warrior, Crystal Swygert interview Randy on "Mick In The Morning." Retro SGM Radio: Spotlight on Sharron Kay King

Sharron Kay King has a riveting testimony of how the Lord brought her out of a life of drug and alcohol addiction, restoring relationships and giving her a new life and career. This talented singer/songwriter from Georgia has received recognition from many areas of the Gospel music industry, including nominations by the Singing News, the Diamond Awards and Absolutely Gospel. She is also the recipient of two SGM Fan Fair awards, having touched hearts across the nation with her country sound and soulful lyrics. This lady knows Who she is singing about! [Editor's note: this interview was originally posted in September 2012 on SGM Radio website.]

Sharron Kay King recently shared some thoughts with SGM Radio for our Showcase of Talent. Since this interview, she has released a new album, Sharron Kay King – The Story of My Life, featuring nine original songs plus a guest appearance by Ann Downing. Sharron is also a veteran Ladies Ministry speaker, traveling across the United States to share with women’s groups about the power of God.

SGM Radio: How did you begin your career in Christian music?
Sharron: Once I realized and accepted the call in my life I began to follow [that call]; I guess about 20 years now. I sing what comes to my heart.

SGM Radio: What is the title of your most recent recording?
Sharron: Don't Stop Believing is my latest project. It was recorded in Nashville.

SGM Radio: What is your most favorite song off of the project and why?
Sharron: “Why Can't We” by the Isaacs. The song speaks for itself.

SGM Radio: Do you have a local church that you attend?
Sharron: Yes, when not on the road I attend The World of Faith Ministries in Macon, GA. I am involved as much as I can be but being full time makes it difficult.

SGM Radio: What has been the most entertaining moment of your career?
Sharron: Oh I've had plenty of those! I guess when my heel got stuck on the '70's shag carpet in the church I was ministering in and I hit the floor, but didn't miss a lick in my song. I just popped back up and kept on singing!

SGM Radio: What has been the most challenging moment of your career?
Sharron: Ministering just two weeks after I lost my mother, that was tough.

SGM Radio: Christians have a lot to be thankful for as they serve the Lord. What are you most thankful for in your life?
Sharron: That by His grace and mercy He has kept me, and I feel honored that He found something in me that He can use.

Mercy’s Well Announces Changes and Welcomes A New Lead Singer

Nashville, TN (August 27, 2013) – It is with mixed emotions that vocal trio Mercy’s Well announces changes to their line up.
Lead singer, Kyle King, will be making his departure in mid September and, after a month of auditions and hearing many talented prospective singers, the group will be welcoming a powerhouse new vocalist. Dustin Simmons, of Dahlonega, Georgia, will make his debut appearance as the new lead singer for Mercy’s Well on September 22, 2013.
King, who has been a tremendous blessing to the group for many years, has felt God leading him in a new direction. He will be setting sail aboard a cruise ship, continuing to use the gifts God has given him but in a very new way. “It’s hard to describe, in words, the last three-and-a-half years I’ve been a part of Mercy’s Well, but I will try: privileged, humbled, and thankful,” shares Kyle. He continues, “I’m privileged to have experienced hundreds of worship services in multiple states, countries, and cultures; humbled to have been a witness of God’s amazing power at work in the lives of His people; and thankful to all the many friends, fans, and supporters of this ministry. My time with the group has truly been a blessing, and I look forward to seeing how God will continue to use each of us, for His glory, in years to come.”
Dustin and his wife, Morgan, will be relocating to North Carolina in the coming months and are very anxious and blessed to see Dustin following God’s plans for him in full-time music ministry. He has been singing for most of his life, including a 5 year tenure with the regional group Omega.
Mercy’s Well founder and tenor, Brad Strider, expresses, “A couple of months ago Kyle came to me and shared that he felt God leading him in a different direction. Anyone that knows me knows I don’t like change, but sometimes change can be God’s way of making everyone affected stronger. While we are sad to see Kyle go, we are excited about the future of Mercy’s Well with Dustin as part of our team.”
Mercy’s Well is making plans for a new recording in early 2014.

Share America Foundation chooses banjo player/vocalist for scholarship

The Share America Foundation, Inc. announced its second 2013 scholarship winner recently at its Sacred Sounds Fridays concert at the Ringgold Depot in Ringgold, Ga.
The events help fund the organization’s Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholarship. Pearl and Floyd Franks are the late parents and former entertainment managers of actor/entertainer Randall Franks, “Officer Randy Goode” from TV’s “In the Heat of the Night.” The scholarships honor students excelling in the Appalachian musical arts.
Banjo player Jonathan Barker, 19, of Copper Hill, Tenn. was selected as one of the 2013 winners. He is a sophomore at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville studying to be an emergency room physician. He is graduate of Copper Basin High School in Polk County.
“It is a distinct pleasure to be honored by Share America and receive this scholarship,” he said. “I know what a privilege it is to have the support of so many great people who help to make it possible.”
Barker has played banjo for 11 years and also plays guitar and sings lead and harmony parts. He performs regularly with his older brother Jeremy Barker, his parents Scott and Angie and fiddler Westley Harris as The Barker Brothers.
He is the younger brother of 2007 Pearl and Floyd Franks Scholar Jeremy Barker.
“My brother began playing music and I thought that was the greatest thing in the world,” he said.
Since his beginning at age 8, with his family, he has performed numerous concerts including opening for legendary performer Ralph Stanley during his “O’ Brother Where Art Thou Tour.” He won the “Fan’s Choice Award” at Raymond Fairchild’s Maggie Valley Opry. He also added “The Shotgun Red Show” on RFD-TV in 2013 to a long list of television appearances.
“We were honored to present a $500 scholarship to assist him as he continues his college studies,” said Share America Chairman Joe Turner.
Franks said that while the organization normally presents rising freshman, it had no regional applicants this year.
“We are very excited by this particular scholar because in a way it is a legacy presentation since he is the second in his family to receive it,” he said. “But also knowing we are helping a banjo playing doctor on his way, I know he will make a lot of people feel better whether he plays for them or treats them.”
Barker is the son of Scott and Angie Barker of Copper Hill, Tenn. He is the grandson of Betty and the late Fred Verner of Turtletown, Tenn. and the late Wilford and Ola Barker of Copper Hill.
The group’s latest CD is “Driven.” For more information about The Barker Brothers, visit barkerbrothers.com.
Share America Foundation Board members include Franks, Turner, Gene Lowery, vice chairman; James Pelt, secretary; and Jerry Robinson, Sr., vice president; and Adam Cathey.
The next Sacred Sounds Fridays is Sept. 13 at 7:30 p.m. featuring the Testimony Quartet and special guest Ryan Stinson at the Ringgold Depot. Admission is a $5 donation. Franks will host the event.

The Dixie Melody Boys Announce New Lead Singer

The Dixie Melody Boys announced a few weeks ago that they would be accepting demo’s for the lead singer position. They also stated that the new member of this legendary group would be introduced on the main stage at this year’s convention. Over the course of three weeks the group received over 300 applications.

“It was an overwhelming response. We didn’t expect so many men to apply. It proved to me that there is a lot of talent in Southern Gospel music. As we stated, our plan was to audition several men, take them on the road with us and then announce them in September. Sometimes plans change.“Stated Matt Felts.

“As I was going through demo’s a voice begin to sing and I knew we had found our next lead singer. Ed listened to his demo and agreed. The moment we met Mike Rogers and heard him sing with us we knew God had brought us the right fit.” added Matt.

“Mike started with us the next weekend. The fans have already shown us that we made the right choice. We debuted him at the Absolutely Gospel Fan Fest and Frank Arnolds Songfest in Jackson, TN. After the response he received we knew it wouldn’t take long for word to get out online so we altered our plans and decided to move up our announcement. When God moves, you go with it. Mike is a great talent and we are proud to have him.” said Ed O’Neal.

Mike Rogers comes to the Dixie Melody Boys from Sandersville, GA. He was a member of Kindred Spirit. Mike has a wife named Bekki and they have a beautiful three year old daughter named Coraline. He will be moving to Kinston, NC this week. “It still feels like a dream. I am so excited to be a part of this group. I’m looking forward to all that is in store.” said Mike Rogers.

The fans of Southern Gospel music will have several great chances to hear the Mike as the group will be featured at many of the summer’s largest events including Silver Dollar City, the James D Vaughn Quartet Festival, the Albert E Brumley Sing and the National Quartet Convention.

The Dixie Melody Boys will be in the studio shortly to begin wotk on their Sophomore project with Song Garden Music Group. “We are excited to get back in the studio, this project is shaping up to be special. Jason Crabb and David Staton will be producing it so it’s starting off on the right track.” Said Steven Cooper.
